Re: 10 Year Old Tawny Port by Niepoort

I've had a similar problem with this port. I have had it in the past and thought it definitely to be one of the best 10 year tawnies that I've had, but every time I come across it in a store it seems to be selling for 10 to 15 dollars more than any other 10 year tawny. A bit frustrating...

Re: Hello?? Anyone out there?

It's cool, rainy and gray here in Gotham, but I've got a bottle of Graham's 1975 on deck for tomorrow night, so it's looking like a good weekend regardless! :P

Re: Quinta do Noval Vintage 1991

I finished this off last night after about 28 hours of decant time. Though the flavors had smoothed out a touch and the color was perhaps a shade darker, my overall impression didn’t really change. There was still prominent alcohol on the mid-palate that carried through to the finish and interfered ...

Re: Quinta do Noval Vintage 1991

Personally, and it would seem contrarily to the majority of folks here on FTLOP, I don’t usually give my ports such long decant times before sipping them. Of course, the younger and more robust the port, the longer I like to let it breathe, but aside from the really young ones, I find that 3 or 4 ho...

Re: MAy 2008 VT : Open something from Smith Woodhouse

+24 Hours . Not much change, though it has mellowed somewhat. Now an extremely easy drinker. I think, overall, this is an entirely pleasant VP, though not quite interesting or exciting enough to warrant drinking again in the next few years. I’d be interested to hear what people think about the surr...

1991 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port

Just another random Wednesday night sipping... The bottle was sealed with a metal capsule, the official seal placed over that, and then a wax capsule melted over the seal with "Quinta do Noval 1991" embossed in the wax on top. A nice presentation, and actually the wax came away much easier...

Re: MAy 2008 VT : Open something from Smith Woodhouse

SMITH-WOODHOUSE COLHEITA 1986 I spotted this bottle in one of my local Brooklyn shops a couple of months ago and had been considering trying it out. I don’t believe I’ve ever had a tawny from Smith-Woodhouse, and since they are this month’s virtual tasting topic, well… looked like another perfect e...

10 Year Old Tawny Port by Quinta de Ventozelo

I found this bottle while I was up in Albany this weekend. Until joining FTLOP I had never even heard of this producer, and this is the first one of their ports that I've ever come across - a good enough reason as any to check it out... The color is almost fully tawny with rusty orange highlights an...

1987 Warre's Quinta da Cavadinha Vintage Port

I bought this bottle at a rather dubious shop over on 2nd Avenue in Midtown near where I work. I can't say that I'm all that comfortable buying port there as the place is a little dingy, they have all of their vintage ports (including some older bottles) standing up, and the staff doesn't offer anyt...

Re: 1927 Fonseca

I haven't shelled out really big bucks for a bottle either. I would readily do it if I could, just never had enough extra funds in the bank to make it feasible  (one day...). I think the most I ever paid for a bottle was a Taylor 77 that cost me $120. I recently drank the Fonseca 70 ($195) with...

Re: TN: Niepoort Vintage 1992

I’ve had the Niepoort 92 on 3 occasions. The first two bottles were in 1998 and 2000. As you might guess, both of these tastings were quite premature, and in both cases the port was still very dark, brooding, and intensely tannic. Although it was a pretty impressive young port, it obviously needed t...

Re: Churchill's Crusted Porto (Bottled 2002)

Coming down towards the end of the bottle now with over 7 hours of decanting. This port continued to darken in character, now taking on some blackberry and licorice notes on the nose and showing a darker edge to the palate also. The tannins have also begun to emerge, showing a slightly more mouth-dr...

2002 Churchill's Crusted Port -- (Bottled 2002)

I've always been curious to try a crusted port. If memory serves me correctly, this is only the second or third one that I've come across in my years of perusing wine shops in the NY/NJ area (I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a Dow's crusted port - does that sound right? Come to think of it, does an...

Re: 1985 Croft Vintage Port

I've had the Croft 85 several times though the last time must have been 2002 or perhaps a bit earlier. Although it did seem to be an early maturing VP at the time, with predominantly tertiary characteristics, I enjoyed it very much each time I had it and thought it had a decent amount of life left i...

Re: April's 2008 Virtual Tasting : Get a VP with 22+ years

I just joined this forum last week (Kudos! by the way, it's a great site), and just discovered the VT room today. Being that I don't have anything on hand to drink for this tasting, I thought I'd post a note from something I drank last month that fits this category. Hope nobody minds  - I'll p...

Re: Seeking advice on the 75 vintage...

Thanks for the recommendations guys. It looks like it's going to be the Graham's 75 for the birthday bottle (assuming we don't have any problem acquiring it before her birthday, which is May 10th). I'll be sure to post my notes after we have it...

Re: Ferreira VP 1994

I would be interested as well to hear more opinions on Ferreiras VP's. The 94 is the only one that I've had myself, and at the time that I drank it it only had a few years of age on it. It was good for sure, but so young and tannic then that it was rather difficult to assess (and this was also early...

2000 Quinta de la Rosa Vintage Port

Just popped this last night and enjoyed it very much... Blackish purple at the core with a purplish burgundy rim - very young looking. It took a good 4 to 5 hours for the nose to come around. When it did it offered a sweet smelling bouquet of raspberry, black mission fig, dark chocolate, and a whiff...
