Re: Your Port collection & maturation dynamics

Roy: She decided that it was to fattening and that she would rather get her calories elsewhere. You know women...when they get an idea in their heads it never leaves. Any way I have found a new port drinker to share a few bottles with and we just enjoyed a 2000 Smith Woodhouse. A much underrated por...

Re: Your Port collection & maturation dynamics

When I first started a cellar I was not much into ports. The bulk of my bottles are purchases from 1994 my daughters birth year, of which I have only opened one or two. I keep adding to these when I see good deals. Besides those purchases the bulk of my ports are from 1997 onwards with the majority ...

Re: Most Dissapointing Vintage

I guess that I was not clear enough in my question.
I was trying to ask which vintage was the most dissapointing that you purchased en primer.

Most Dissapointing Vintage

It seems that we always talk about the best of this and that, but I was wondering what is the most dissapointing declared vintage inthe last 10 or so that you have tasted and purchased. Are their vintages which you have purchased that you might trade for another now that you can look back. It is alw...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

I was just notified that my commercial storage faclity is picking up my winning auction lot of 17 bottles of 1994 ports; 8 Quintoa do Vesuvio, 5 Grahams and 4 Martinez. With commission I paid $786.50 (46,26 per bottle). I was watching an on-line auction and at this price I could not pass up this lot...

1999 Quinta do Noval LBV Port

Part of a case purchased which I have been working through slowely to see how an LBV ages (still seven left). Decanted for 6 hrs. Initial smell is overwhelming prunes and a quick hint of blue fruits. In the glass the wine is still opaque without even a slight hint of bricking out. As I swirl the win...

When do wines change the most?

With great interest I read Roy's notes on the '07's and it made me think about when a wine changes the most during their evolution towards maturity? As we all know most wines are made to be consumed within a few years of bottling (something like 98% of all production). but what I am asking deals wit...

Re: A question on Niepoort 1997

I also bought a case of the 97 and it has been in long term storage since it was released. I also have some concerns about the wine based on the posts here, but two years age I bought an odd lot of wines at an auction which included 2 btls of Neipoort 97 and 92. One of the 97 showed signs of leakage...

I have only tried 4 vintages of Neipoort (1991, 1992, 1997 & 2003)

I would have to go with the 1997.

I have never tasted citrus so clearly in a port before and it was entirely delicious.

Al B.

Thanks for the note and your opinion about its drinking window.

I did buy every bottle (full case) and plan to lay it down with the rest of the 94's for my daughter.

She will turn 21 in 8 years so we will start on them then.

Thanks.

Roy: I am going to buy as much of the Noval as I can (these 94's will be mostly for my daughter as it is her birth year and I have been laying down ports for her). I hope she will like port. I already have most of the top producers such as Taylor, Neipoort, Fonseca, Warre, Dow & Vesuvio, but I h...

1994 Quinta do Noval

I have the opportunity to purchase a few bottles of 94 Noval for $75.00 each.

I have been accumulating 94's as it is my daughters birth year (lucky her).

I have never seen a FTLOP review of this wine.

Is it worth the $?

Any comments would be helpful.

2005 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

After reading Roy's tasting notes about the 2005 ports, I was excited and when I saw this in my local wine shop I just had to try one. From a 1/2 bottle. I opened it and had a small glass and left the rest to decant for the afternoon (I can do this as I am recovering at home for a few weeks). This w...

Santos:

Thanks for the info.

It is interesting to see what the auction market values of port are.

Were these prices higher that the pre auction estimates?

Do they represent increase over past Morrell auctions?

I do hate the use of the word collector. To me it implies someone who wants to look at the bottles rather than drink them. What the point in that. When I purchase any wine it is with the intension to drink it with good friends. There are certain bottles which I would like to share with special peopl...

There was a local auction yesterday where another bottle of the 1994 appeared but it was in a lot with a regular Noval 1997 and the min bid was $750 (ex buyers premimum and tax) so I passed. There were many full cases of 94's Dow, Warres, Vesuvio, Graham's, Noval, Fonseca and Taylors. None of them w...

I have never had the chance to taste a Nacional, but last year I had the opportunity to buy a bottle of the Nacional 1994 at auction (my daughter birth year) so I put in a low bid for $525 and I won it. I have been thinking of when and under what circumstances will I crack the bottle. Still don't ha...

Earlier in the year I won an auction lot which included 4 bottles of port. 2 each of Neipoort 97 and 91. I tried a 97 since it showed signs of seepage and I have over a case of this wine, but I have never tried the 91 and have never seen any tasting notes on it. Anyone have any experience with it. I...

Since last summer ALL older good/great (best ever 2000, 2003 & 2005 good/very good 1995 & 1996) vintages have increased in price dramatically. I correlate this to the stratospheric 2005 Bordeaux pricing. As the public, especially in the USA, realized how expensive the 2005 wines were and how...

1977 Offley Vintage Port

Thought this was the perfect day to open a bottle and sit around with a glass. While decanting it looked a little darker than I thought it would be, a beautiful pinot color with no bricking at the edges. It thru a little sediment but not as much as I expected. At first it was a little spirits on the...
