Re: Madeira is gaining popularity ...

Roy, thanks for posting the article. That's quite a jump in sales for Waitrose. I'm curious if other UK retailers are seeing a similar surge in Madeira's popularity. To that end, I wonder if world sales have increased.

I'd like to thank everyone for their insight.

Here's a photo of what I'm referring to...

If you look, you'll see a "D" on the tag.

IVBAM Codes

I was recently tasting a bunch of non-vintage Madeiras and had the bottles lined up. Staring at the neck of the bottles I noticed the IVBAM "certificates" that covered the corks of the each of the bottles. In addition to a bottle or lot number, each label bore some type of alphabetical cod...

Re: Rare Wine Co New Orleans Terrantez

I'm still waiting to hear myself. The distributor that has the four cases is Polaner Selections, and, to the best of my knowledge it is allocated meaning it will be spread around to different retailers. I will let you know which retailers as soon as I do.

Re: Books and Other Writings About Madeira

Derek, thanks for the suggestion. For anyone interested in Wine into Words please note that the 2nd Edition is much improved as it has a comprehensive subject index which the 1st Edition lacks. In other wine book news, I had the good fortune to meet Mannie Berk of Rare Wine Company fame. I asked him...

Rare Wine Co New Orleans Terrantez

I know that some people greatly enjoy this wine. A little bird told me that 4 cases are soon to be available (a new release) in the NY market. Stay tuned for more information as I don't know which retailers will be carrying it yet.

How Long Should I Hold On To...?

I have single bottles of each of the following: Croft VP 2000 Ferreira VP 2003 Warre's VP 2003 Quinta Do Crasto VP 2003 Ramos Pinto VP 2003 They're all stored properly and I'm in no rush to drink them. I have not tasted any of them before so have little experience with the individual producers. The ...

TN: NV Fortnum & Mason's Christmas Pudding Madeira

I purchased this bottle on my last visit to London at Fortnum and Mason's. This is the brand's private label non-vintage Madeira; it is produced and bottled by Barbeito and the back label says its a Malvasia Reserva. It cost £19.50 ($35-38 US) for a 500ml bottle. The color is a medium amber. The nos...

Re: Books and Other Writings About Madeira

Has anyone purchased (available from RWC) or come across "Henry Walters Madeira Sale 1943 (reprint)?" I imagine this is an auction catalog, but I am curious as to what's in it, how many pages it is, and what auction house originally published it.

Thoughts anyone?

Peter,

Thanks for the suggestion. I've never seen this book before, though I heard it mentioned (Liddel references it in Madeira). Anyway, I'll be certain to keep an eye out for it.

Re: Your Top Madeiras Tasted in 2009

Inge, Excellent question. Upon initially hearing this, it seemed rather curious. I'm sure Roy or someone else can clarify, but I imagine that just because a Madeira qualifies for Frasqueira/Vintage doesn't mean a producer has to call so. My guess is D'Oliveira has this Terrantez in barrel and had be...

Re: Croft Pink Port

I have to add, despite my limited experience with Port, that I have trouble stomaching this stuff. I've tried it twice and both times something about it seemed off-kilter. For me, the sweetness dominates at the expense of everything else.

Of course, I haven't tried it in a cocktail...

Re: Books and Other Writings About Madeira

Reidar, The "new" 2008 edition of Notes on a Cellar-Book is annotated by Thomas Pinney, an English professor who also happens to be an incredible wine historian. I highly recommend it. For those of you who aren't familiar with this text, it is (or, at the very least, was ) a quite famous p...

Roy, Thanks for the warm welcome. The IWC is the same school you're thinking of and Mary still runs it. Thanks for making me aware of the Madeira tours you run. It'd be great to join you and like-minded individuals sometime in the future. I look forward to exploring the website and participating in ...
