The very first trade ...

OK, you guys asked for a place to buy and trade wine ... now let's see who will be first and what they have to offer. Hey ladies (and there are a good percentage signed on here so far!) I'd be really impressed if you were to take part in this area as well.

Ah, the beauty of living outside of California where the grapes and deals are both "ripe for the picking." I can even buy Washington State wines made just a few miles away, cheaper from CA ... including shipping costs!

Purchasing habits

When you go to buy a young or old Port, regardless of style ... do you buy in case lots, 2, 4 or 6 bottle quantities, and why?

I am interested to learn what the folks here look to achieve when making their purchaes.

Andy, It sounds like you are making smart decisions and are the man with the purchasing plan when it comes to Port. Don't worry or feel the need to appologize for liking Port more than other wines. I too have a sweet tooth and drink it quite frequently, from many producers, many vintages and actuall...

Alan, There is nothing wrong with being a bargain hunter. I was very proud of purchasing bottles 15+ years ago for great prices after "investigating" their provenance. There is a very satisfying feeling, like when you get a great deal on a new car at low finance rates too. I have had a bun...

Alex, Great to see you here! Thanks for signing up. It will be a pleasure to have someone so well versed in Port joining us. To be perfectly frank, there are 3 Port websites that I consider "friendly competitors" when it comes to offering top notch content that remains fresh. I am not coun...

1999 Ferreira LBV Port

Although I did not note the words Traditional or Unfiltered anywhere on the bottle, I am almost positive that Ferreira does make this style of Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port. The 1990 LBV offers a dark ruby color with a very inviting aromatic profile. It was bottled in 2003, after aging for 4 years...

Hi David and welcome to the forum. Your question is excellent and exactly what I was hoping when we opened "Port Basics" a few hours ago, to provide a comfortable spot to get away from some of the cork dorks. Fred has provided a very detailed and informative approach for you. I am going to...

Jay, $25 for the 2000 Broadbent is absolutely crazy. I have had every Broadbent vintage since the debut of the '94 (not surprisingly) which I was the first American to try. The 2000 IS the best Vintage Port of the four releases the Broadbent's have done ('94, '97, '00, '03). At that price, I hope yo...

Alan,

I will certainly let you know. I have been watching prices since the first tranch in both London and here across the USA. Your prices are very good. I only paid $2 per bottle less on most, and $5 more on the Fonseca. So, I would say you did very very well.

Port 101

Hopefully, this will take some of the starch out of us Port geeks and remind us of our humble roots and vines. Please DO feel free to ask ANYTHING you ever wanted to know about Port but were afraid to ask. WE are here to provide you the answers to things like what is the difference between a ruby an...

Favorite airlines?

When flying to Portugal, of course there is their national airlines, TAP but there are a number of others that make the trip to Portugal. I know that British Airways flies there too and a handful of others from the USA. But we'll have members here from a wide assortment of venues around the world an...

Madeira tastings

I hope that members who participate here, will let the rest of us know if there is going to be a great Madeira tasting whether in the USA or abroad. In 2006, I will probably try to arrange some sort of significant tasting of Madeira and hope that members will join in the fun. I am open to traveling ...

Sources of supply

In the USA, The Rare Wine Company is well regarded as THE source for high quality bottles of Madeira. The owner has fabulous connections and is tipped off, the moment any new casks are unearthed, sold or looking to be bottled. I am wondering if anybody purchases their Madeiras from other sources and...

Solera method Madeiras

I had a lot of these Solera method Madeiras when I was first starting out and lived in Virginia at the time. They seemed more plentiful than now where Vintage Madeira popularity has increased exponentially, as has the price. Do others share my enjoyment of the Solera Madeiras? If so, who do you feel...

The "comfort zone" ...

I may do a poll in the future on a topic like this, once we have reached some critical mass, as so far in the past two days we have had about 35 people sign up from 7 countries. What I am looking to find out is, what is your comfort zone in terms of spending on a 750 of Port? What about Madeira? Ple...

What % of your cellar is made up of dessert wine?

Considering that folks who visit this site are Port and/or Madeira lovers, it is natural to think we'll have folks with more than the 1-5% that we see on other BBs. I would estimate that my Madeira and Port together make up about 1/3 of my entire wine collection. I realize this is an atypical mix, b...

Do you have a favorite Port producer or vintage ... or both?

I am always intrigued to read what people buy as their "go to" Port, whether it is Tawny or Vintage, which producer, what vintage etc. There are so many great ones out there, but a ton of opinions as to which is the best. I am more interested in "personal favorites" rather than w...
