Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

I will be there. Maybe solo, maybe with a friend. Looking forward to meeting all of you. There was talk of someone bringing a Colheita...I have a few if one of these would be of interest....let me know. Dows Colheita 1997 Niepoort Colheita 2001 and a 1998 Smith Woodhouse Colheita 1994 John, I think...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

At the very beginning of the thread, I mentioned I'd bring the GC 1980 and then when it was mentioned that you would, I opted for the Dow. The GC was something that I think Lamont or someone had mentioned elsewhere on the forum that they would like to try. That was my only reason for bringing it up...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

So, to clarify: Jeff, Josh and Roy will each bring one bottle of Port, and you don't want any others to show up with Port, right? OK, so apparently I missed the "updated" email which of course means I don't get any more notifications til i check in. So! Yes to correct my previous post abo...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

Works for me and thank you Jeff. As for the date, definitely FRIDAY the 9th. I was going to bring a GC'80 as mentioned, but I guess I'll do a Dow instead, if I can figure out how to get it decanted ahead of time. Can't show up empty handed, not my style. Might just ship it to you next week. Will th...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

I'm going to reiterate that I don't care nor really have the time to set up a proper tasting for what is now 9 people. I'd like to refer to my previous suggestion that we just bring 2-3 bottles, go to a bar and have a very informal meet and greet. Agreed. A Tasting: Roy, while I'd certainly like to...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

Friday night ... put something casual together... It is not like a lot of effort needs to go into this one. {8 participants} Let's keep this simple, so planning will really ONLY require glassware and a restaurant reservation. ... How about everyone mentions a bottle of 1980 Vintage Port ... a resta...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

I'm booked both nights, but I can get free for friday night. We could do a small 80's horizontal, or perhaps just "everyone brings/splits one." The latter allows me to accidentally make things interesting :) Jeff and I will take care of finding a suitable place for a small friday night gat...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Fonseca 1970 -- a leaker in honor of someone's newborn leaker :) it was fantastic. Also opened a Warre's 2000 for #PortDay, which was good, just coming out of its dumb phase, and still full of tannins. Typical Warre's style roughness evident, but it pulled a pomegranate out of its hat after a while ...

Re: Gould Campbell Crusted Port

I have some Gould Campbell 1980 Vintage Port that is particularly tasty, though not especially valuable. Are you sure its crusted not vintage? GC80 Vintage Port market price is around $80/bottle, but i've seen it as low as $40. I don't know what crusted port would be, but certainly less. At only two...

ps - don't be shy, someone from FTLOP already reached out. We're all one big happy band of port drinkers, not wheelin-dealin investors.

Re: Upcoming Auctions

There is a US auction coming up this saturday; a group of us are bidding jointly and aim to win the older Port vintage lots. If anyone else was of a similar mind, I'd encourage you to reach out to me. Y'know, just because :D No particular reason :D

Re: October Auctions

I checked in and saw zachys 1633 went for 800, less than their low (900) but still a pretty high price for those bottles. I was surprised how high, in general, prices were for the auction. Many bottles (non-port) went above their low, and even close to their high.

Re: October Auctions

Zachy's this Friday has some neat things. I was interested in 295, 783, 1047, 1272, 1527, and 1633. And I won't snarf up your 1991 Burmester Marc :-) Please let me get the 2000 Taylor VVV. (Different auction.) We'd been eying 1633 but i won't bid. The price for those bottles if it hits the low (900...

Re: October Auctions

Lots of lots in the next Zachy's auction.... ...am immediately tempted by lots 445-448. Those look pretty good; the younger ones (445 & 448) are probably good buys. Those two old TF's are interesting, but that's a lot of $$ for just one bottle. I couldn't find a catalog (with an index), but a l...

Re: October Auctions

Thanks. I will check em out. Luke, usually the lots are announced ~1 month in advance. I aim for auctions in the early spring and mid fall, when shipping temperatures are ideal, or for auctions where i can drive to pick up the Port. When i see Port, i look at the low price, then i add in the "...

Re: Buying Port this year

I've been cut back more due to space limitations (and spousal glare), but it's tough to avoid jumping on a deal when I spot it. I've been focusing mostly on filling holes, picking up halfs, and buying sure bets. 2/3rds of the collection is from the biggest years from 1980-2003, of which there are 2-...

83-00 VPs just listed retail

Some good prices just listed by HDH, they cover VPs from 1983-2000. I picked up F83 and W83 from them recently, and I see there's more F83 and some T83 now (plus a few others). Prices aren't silly, so it's worth checking out. I've already done what buying from them I plan to, so it's all yours :)

Re: Do you believe this still to be a good time to be buying older vintages of Port?

Oh heck yes. While there is financial risk to investing in Port now, rather than some other depressed market asset, I will feel so much better opening an old bottle i got on the cheap in the past few years (to say nothing of how i'll feel after drinking it). Prices rebounded a bit early this year, b...
