Re: TN: 1937 D'Oliveiras Madeira Sercial

Hi John,
I'm taking a 1928 Sercial to a friend's too - in Melbourne. We'll both be interested in your notes...

Re: TN: 1937 D'Oliveiras Madeira Sercial

Hi John,
Just wondered if, 2-3 weeks later, you've found the 1937's profile has changed for the better... is the residual sugar still so dominant? I have 2 bts of the same bottling, & was thinking of gifting one to a friend who prefers a high acid, drier style of madeira...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

Thinking of springing for some of the Blandy's 1978 Terrantez - from the absence of any CT notes, this may be the first release of this vintage by them. Has anyone been able to taste this at source or from a recent purchase?

Re: What significance has the recency of bottling had for you?

Thanks to everyone for fascinating input. I should elaborate that my own purchases are nearly all post 1970 vintages. That means the first bottlings as vintage madeira will have been post-1990. For drinking these now, I followed the principle that I should seek out the latest bottlings to be able to...

Re: What significance has the recency of bottling had for you?

Hi Mr. Zee,
That's an encouraging report - I must try to get hold of some bottles of the latest release of that wine.

Reading this eye-boggling thread makes me wonder if I'm the only person looking for some closure here😎

Thanks, Eric. That rhymes with what Roy recently said about that Madeira.

Re: What significance has the recency of bottling had for you?

Hi Eric,
Has each of those madeiras improved for you with successive bottlings - more than the same bottling drunk after several more years in bottle? That's the comparison I'm looking for.
Best,
Nigel

What significance has the recency of bottling had for you?

I started a madeira thread on the Terrantez grape some months back. This comment on that thread from one Board member has prompted me to start this new thread: "I’ve tasted H&H1954, D’Oliveiras 1971, Blandy 1976 and 1977, Cossart 1977, D’Oliveiras 1977 (2009 & 2018 bottling), D’Oliveira...

Re: Post-war plantings/bottlings of Terrantez

hi Eric,
Those 19th C bottles are just great memories for me now, but I'm really enjoying a drop of 1960s or 70s Sercial or Terrantez at the end of a meal. That for me is the perfect 'digestif' or accompaniment to a range of cheeses.

Re: Post-war plantings/bottlings of Terrantez

OK, here goes: my notes from an event I held in Hong Kong in 2001. At the end I append advice & comments I got from helpful fans of madeira on Robin Garr's wine page: some excellent ninput on thr Terrantez grape, which was not well known to our crowd at that time (& still isn't if truth be t...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

I managed to pick up a good amount of halves of Blandy's 1976 Terrantez. Surprised to see one poster rating Blandy's below D'Oliveiras & Cossart Gordon. I've found their vintage Sercial & Terrantez wines excellent.

Re: Post-war plantings/bottlings of Terrantez

Wow! What a Madeira discussion Board Roy has got going here...
Thanks for all the responses.
If I can work out how to attach, I can share notes from a 2001 Madeira event I held - before prices went crazy...

Post-war plantings/bottlings of Terrantez

I have just been seduced by some halves of 1977 Blandy's Terrantez - my rating, an intoxicated 94 - and am trying to find. out more about recent plantings and existing plantings since WW2. Any information welcome.
