1994 Quarles Harris Vintage Port

Picked this up the other day at Trader Joe's for $39.99 and of course had to open it right away. Decanted through cheesecloth as per usual, this has become much darker with over 48 hours in the decanter. It's now a blackish burgundy nearly all the way to the edge. The nose is boisenberry, prunes and...

Re: Thoughts on purchasing Port by the case?

Don, I've never had the funds to purchase VP by the case, but I was living in Portland for about 6 months in 2010 and I found some excellent deals on Port at Vinopolis. I don't know whether they offer case discounts there but their prices were pretty impressive compared with the NY/NJ retail market....

Andy,

Re: TRADER JOE'S - not the first name you think of for Port

The QH '94 has finally arrived at Trader Joe's in Manhattan for $39.99. I picked one up today along with a bottle of the '05 LBV which they still have plenty of at $12.99. I'll post notes on both once I finish drinking them - haven't had either yet. They still have the QH 10 yr Tawny which is a stea...

Re: Top 3 essential books on port?

I second the recommendations for The Port Companion as well as Port and the Douro . I first got into Port in '96 and The Port Companion was the first book I found on Port. I must have read through it a hundred times, it was like my Port bible and also my reference for learning how to write a tasting...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

If that's the plan I'll come by the Palm as well. Not sure how it will work to do this at a bar but whatever's clever. Like Roy, I can't see showing up empty handed so I'll definitely bring something though I'm not sure it'll be an 80 VP. Roy, not sure if I understood your comment correctly but did ...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

A polite observation from someone not involved… Meeting up to drink Port with like-minded individuals should be stress-free, friendly and enjoyable for everyone involved. There appear to be some avoidable mismatched expectations or misunderstandings developing in this thread that might compromise t...

Re: The complex topic of LAW OF THIRDS

Looking at the legislation, it seems to suggest that this minimum stock threshold does not apply to producers looking to export port made from grapes that are exclusively harvested on their own property, but i might be wrong as my portuguese is non-existent. So does this entire piece of legislation...

Re: PORT OFFLINE in NYC?

Well, I'm happy to do what I can to try to plan this although I don't have a whole lot of restaurant connections. As Jeff mentioned, the fact that it's going to be a Friday night does make it a bit trickier but I'm sure it can be worked out. Personally, I'm on a very tight budget and would prefer so...

No, the only offline I've had the chance to attend was the Dow's vertical that Jeff and Josh organized last year, although I did meet Glenn there.

Sounds good to me. Jeff, it would be nice to share some port with you again and Roy, it would be great to finally meet you. I don't own any 80 VP but I'd be happy to source something if that's the theme. Just let me know how things pan out and whether I can be of any help it putting this together bu...

Re: Gould Campbell Crusted Port

Thanks fellas, I thought that sounded a bit too good to be true for a retail price. But as you said Glenn, $60 is still a hell of a deal for a 32 year old VP! I didn't realize it could be had that cheap. Once I can afford to buy some VP again I may have to give it a shot.

Re: Gould Campbell Crusted Port

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but where are people finding GC 80 VP for $40? I wouldn't be as surprised if that's an auction price but if we're talking retail that seems incredibly low.

Could be interesting to leave it open for a while and let people guess... sort of a vicarious blind tasting.

Might be a cool idea for a recurring thread... [cheers.gif]
