1977 Warre's Vintage Port

Post by David Spriggs »

This is probably the wine that I have had in my collection the longest. I purchased these during the recession of the early 1990's when lot's of ports were being dumped for silly prices. They were great, but at some point (late 1990's?) they lost their "punch" and I hoped that they were going into a closed phase, but didn't have a lot of hope considering they were 30 years old at that time. So I stopped drinking them. I wanted a port and I saw this in the cellar and opened it. The bottle is a very slight leaker. The cork was fully saturated, but that was it! The color is fabulous. No bricking and looks surprisingly dark. The nose is very clean - bright Bing cherry and chocolate mousse. A big entry - fills the palate. Not that complex, but really delicious! A very long finish with excellent acidity. Wonderful! There's no rush to drink this up. A very strong 1977 VP. 93 points
