How long do you wait to drink again after a cold?

Post by Andy Velebil »

Since I came down with the summer cold this past weekend it curtailed my wine drinking plans. While I am now feeling better, I've still got a lingering cough and last night was thinking about when I should start partaking in my favorite beverage again. I figure maybe this Friday or Saturday would be good if the cough starts going away, so about a week.

How long do you normally wait after being sick to partake again?

Are you waiting for health reasons or just so you can taste what you're drinking.

Was kinda thinking both. But probably leaning more to the heath reasons.

I was just really sick for the first time in years....I had no taste or smell, but also no desire to drink. When finally on the mend I really waited until I could smell....that's the benchmark.

Cough syrup contains alcohol, but of course certain medications should not be taken with alcohol. That aside, if I can't smell I won't be opening anything special.

Wine, and red wine in particular is usually the last thing I get back onto. If I've got a sore throat, I'll often have whisky, either neat, on ice or in a hot toddy as it comes on. As I'm getting past it, I might test drive with a beer to see how things are going but I find that I'm not too keen in red wine until things have just about totally cleared up.
I tend to find that coffee doesn't work to well for me when I have a cold too, so I tend to drink more tea.

In the past I'm usually in a similar camp. Wine usually is the last thing I go back to. No idea why that is....maybe afraid of it not tasting right due to my taste being off and then stuck with an open bottle. Not sure. Regardless, I usually end up waiting at least a week or two before going back to alcohol. Though I think I'll give wine a shot later tonight to be different and to see what happens.

Don't let a little cold knock you off your game. Just finish the evening with Night Nurse instead of Madeira...

Lucky for me, but I really don't get sick all that often. And when I do it's pretty mild, so I don't usually have to change anything and can just go about my daily business.

That said, I tend to wait until it's all gone before I drink anything nice. I'll drink a 20-yr old or LBV the entire time, but will wait a week to make sure my palate is back to normal before I crack open a 40-yr old or 1970 VP.

I don't get sick very often either (knock on wood). I've got a 2008 Vargellas standing up to be opened after this post....emergency decant procedure is in full swing. :D

As a Physician I usually use an alcoholic drink as a cure for a viral 'cold' . It would appear to have worked well over the last
70 years.!
