My wife and I stayed overnight at Quinta do Portal end-May this year. We enjoyed the excellent food made by their chef Milton. One of the dishes was accompanied by this wine, and we brought one bottle home in order to find out whether it tasted as well at our house (which it did). Relatively seldom to find a one-grape Douro red consisting of Tinta Barocca. Although this grape is used in a many ports and Douro wines, but seldom on its own. This wine is aged for 3 months in French oak barrels. Strong alcohol 15.5 %. Second year of this single-grape wine. 5,000 bottles made in 2016.
Decanted 45 minutes. Medium purple colour. Fresh fruity aroma. Medium body. Fresh, appealing taste of berries. Power is showing up towards the end. Nice tannins. The acidity is quite strong, but still it works with this grape. A well-structured wine which is easy to like. Medium length aftertaste. 90 pts.
