A Danish friend let me know on Friday and it is a sad day for the family Niepoort and all of us who love their Ports and still wines. Born in 1927 (like Michael Broadbent) Rolf van der Niepoort was the winemaker and head of the company from the time when his father retired, (his father produced many great early-mid 20th century Port bottlings). Dirk made Port beginning in 1987 under his father's tutelage, with a Vintage Port, Colheita and Garrafeira in his first full vintage. His first Douro wine was vinified in 1990. Rolf remained involved in managing the company up until the midpoint of the 1990"s when he decided to retire.

A great tribute would be to open a bottle of Niepoort Port this weekend. But it can certainly be a 10, 20 or 30 year old Tawny too.

Feel free to post a photo here, and/or a tasting note.

Condolences to Dirk, his mom, his two sons Daniel and Marco, daughter Anna, along with the rest of the Niepoort family!

The Niepoort name is in small print, but this was made by Dirk & Co.

Wow. Sad. I'm thinking of the Niepoort family especially Dirk and Verena. I'll have to open one of Rolf's wines in remembrance.
