1994 Vintage Ports by the bottle or case

Post by Roy Hersh »

Not Just 'Any Old Port'
A lot has happened since the 1994 Port vintage. The millennium. The BCS. And a general depletion of reasonably priced stocks of older Ports coupled with a general rise in overall Port prices. That makes this offer special for a number of reasons. First you're getting a thirteen year old Port for not much more than what the current releases are selling. Second, in our opinion 1994 is the best modern vintage we've ever tasted. While some old-timers might disagree, even they would have to accept '94 as one of the top years of the last half century, along with 1977 or 1963. Finally, there's the question of sourcing. These did not come from some broker in England nor did we take the stocks over from some defunct restaurant. They came from the source, the Symington family who owns these Port houses, through their U.S. agent. Historic vintage, excellent value, this is a golden opportunity to add these sensational Ports to your own collection. Quantities are limited...

The winner of our in-house 1994 Port tasting a decade ago, this wine continues to go from strength to strength and may ultimately prove to be the greatest Warres ever produced. Robert Parker concurs, noting, "One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-in... read more

The greatest Graham's since 1985 and probably better than that fabled wine of the vintage. Parker notes, "In a port tasting, tasting Graham's is almost like tasting a big, rich, succulent Merlot after a group of blockbuster, tannic Cabernets. Sweeter and more obvious than many ports, the opaque purple-colored 1994 is fruity, powerful, and rich, with an addictive hedonistic quality. It will be ready ... read more

"Greatest Vesuvio this century"? Who are we to argue with Jim Suckling? We agree, this Port is a monster. Suckling writes, "Terrific aromas of berries and violets, with a hint of mint. Full-bodied and lightly sweet, with fine, silky tannins that build on the palate and caress the tongue. Outstanding concentration and harmony. Greatest Vesúvio this century."

I have a case plus of all of these already (2+ for the Vesuvio) or I might bite on this one. All of these are fantastic, with the Vesuvio being even beyond that.
