8 days left, so what Port will grace your Christmas table?

Post by Roy Hersh »

I am heading to Michigan tomorrow morning with my family and have to decide tonight which 8 wines to bring down with me (including 2-3 for an offline).

Decisions, decisions. I am trying to see if I can find out what we'll be eating on Christmas so I can bring the appropriate wines and of course Port.

Do you already know what Port you will be opening on Christmas?

1971 Quita do Noval Colheita
Side by side Graham's 30 yr & Taylor 30 yr

Also standing up for other holiday party functions:
2000 Ferreira VP & 1995 Fonseca Guimaraens

I have mentioned on FTLOP previously that I am eying a 1970 Taylor and maybe a 1963 Romariz Colheita.

Not sure yet, as for many years now, there is a lot of very cheap wines flying around during the christmass parties of family.

I'll probably open 83 Warre's if I'm in a good mood 8--)

Considering a Burmester 1986 Colheita, but I'm really not sure if a VP would go better with the traditional Danish christmas desert of creamed rice pudding with vanilla and hot cherry sauce. May substitute for a young VP.

Probably just a Sandeman 20 or RWC Boston Bual. I forgot to bring up some VP's from my parents' cellar, and virtually all of my friends are out of town on that day. I'll have to make due with what's on hand in my kitchen :(

Over the two week festive period which includes my wifes birthday;

1. Warres 1970
2. Niepoort 1994 & 1988 colheita
3. Niepoort 30yr old tawny
4. Martinez 1970

no doubt a few others as well.

My official family Christmas Dinner will happen this Saturday. Gould Campbell 1983 and Croft 1975 (from the cellar of the late Lord Lichfield) are likely to be joining us 8--)

I'm just looking into that exact question and found some available Martinez 1994 which I could get for about 35€ (equals 25 Pounds or 50$).

Is the price fair? And is that port worth being picked up or should I even try to get some more to cellar them (which i can't do a lot at the moment).

The alternative would be a Taylor's Terra Feita 1982 for 36€ so virtually same price.

Can anyone compare the two or tell me which one you liked better?

Thanks for the advice, Johannes

I was going to have a Cockburn '27 with a mid-shoulder fill that I know I have somewhere in my cellar. However, when I was re-racking a couple of weeks ago to package up some bottles for offsite storage, something went wrong in my tracking system and now I can't find any of the bottles that I am looking for. My Holidays this year will be spent re-racking everything so that I know where my bottles are in 2008!

A Taylor 77 since my youngest brother was born that year and if we get through that quickly may have to see how one of the baby's is evolving (eyeing a Vesuvio 94 since I have not had one for few years, I just need to 'find' a leaker).

1985 Taylor. But I'll drink that only if the 1933 Justino's malmsey runs out.

Probably none, as I am the only Port drinker in the family and will be the one driving  But there is always the sunday before or the day after.....and there is a 1995 Dow's Bomfim on death row that I've wanted to try after all the earlier talk about the 1995 vintage 8--)

I had a good rummage through some of my bottles last night and have the two that I think are likely to be opened on or just before Christmas.

First is a bottle that is leaking slightly of Vesuvio 1992. That is likely to be opened tonight and then drunk over the course of the next 4 days, or so.

Christmas Eve is likely to be greeted with a bottle of Dalva 1970, although I may swap this for a bottle of Dow 2001 LBV if we have guests over who are port gluggers rather than port drinkers.

After that it will depend on what I find as I start to re-rack everything.
