1970 Ferreira Vintage Port

Post by SEAN C. »

The '70 Ferreira was a very dark plum and deep red color in the glass. It had a wonderful nose of sweet pastry dough. It was very thick and rich on the palate with a floral, grape, and cake like taste in the mouth. The 1970 had a short six second finish but was one of the best Ports of the evening. I would not hesitate to buy more of this one as this was the second time I have had this with excellent results.

It was interesting to see this port evolve in the glass as it is the only one of the flight I revised my final mark during the tasting, as obviously it was getting better.

I'd say that this 70 is at its perfect moment of his life to be drank. Complex and charming nose of minth, floral notes, citrus marmalade, some tar and exotic woods are also noticeable. On the palate, the density is really contrasting from previous port with high sugar content, still the acidity is there but much more controlled. Still some red fruits flavours are still well alive, along with strong citrus and toffey flavours, minthy finish of good length. 17/20

The thickness was un "Ferreira-like", and more like the top tier ports. An excellent vintage, but lacks some of the "finesse" that other Ferriera's show in general. More of a blockbuster kind of port. One of my favorites of the night.
