2002 Vista Alegre LBV Port

Cracked this last night for just a small glass before bed time. No time for decanting last night so I just recorked it and tossed it into the fridge after the one glass. Today I've got time for more than a glass though and I am glad about that. A deep opaque purple is more reminiscent of a Vintage Port than an LBV. A big fragrant nose of dark berries and chocolate tickle the nose and keep it planted there for a good long time. After the initial wave of blackberries slide across the tongue a massive wave of tannins pucker the mouth. Just when you think you've had enough of the tannins a healthy dose of milk chocolate comes forward and leads the way into a long blueberry finish. This has a lot going on for an LBV and sadly I drank it way too early. If you happen to own some, put them away for another 10 years. I wish this was available in the States so I could buy more, as this was my only bottle.

I love the Vista Alegre LBVs. I actually prefer their LBVs to their Vintage Ports, although both are high quality. I'll have to buy a few in Portugal next month, if possible.

Andy, thanks for that interesting note! I was not aware until now that Vista Alegre produces high class LBV. In my area 1997 and 2000 LBV would be available for 16 respectively 17 EUR.

I've got to check my notes, as I've had ome others a couple years ago. But thats a good price it sounds like. Grab a couple and let us know how they compare. I am very curious.

I *loved* the 1999 LBV. If you can find that it's worth a try.

I agree, the Vista Alegre LBVs are top drawer. Then again their aged Tawnies of all types are pretty darn good too.
