A handful of worthy VP's from RWC

The Rare Wine Co. is offering some interesting older bottles of Vintage Port from the famous and impeccable Pen-Y-Gwryd Hotel's cellar (in Snowdonie, North Wales. This was the hotel that Sir Edmund Hillary and other famous climbers stayed at during training for their ascent of Mt. Everest (1953). The provenance is about as good as it gets. The prices are reasonable too, considering these were purchased many years ago:

The baby: 1977 Quarles Harris @ $89.95/bottle it is not often that you can find bottles from that year under $100 anymore.

1963 Cockburn (Oporto bottling) - $189.95
1963 Croft (Army & Navy bottling) - $179.95
1964 Graham's Quinta dos Malvedos (actually labeled just Malvedos back then) - $135.00 - celebrate Glenn's birthyear
1945 Taylor (Oporto bottling) - $1,395 - a fantastic Vintage Port that was resealed by Christian Seely's father, James in 1988. Only six of these 750's are available.

Yes, it was just called/labeled as "Malvedos" back then as the grapes weren't all from the Malvedos Quinta back then. It wasn't until the 1998 vintage when the name was changed to Quinta dos Malvedos. A technical oppsie on their part, but I'm sure no one will hold it against them

No, a spelling error on my part as I probably should have added a second "o" to it. Oopsie, as in "oops" we made a mistake. Which still may be spelled wrong, but I've not had any coffee yet this morning nor my cup of OJ either

I keep trying to remember to call them, but they're either closed (outside of work hours) or I forget.

But they're open now, so I'm going to go call and order some of those '64s. I need more for my stash!

That was a nice range of ports that RWC was offering - wonder who bought up the '64s. I wouldn't have thought there would have been much competition for Glenn.

'64 is a port vintage I rarely see or drink. I think all I own from '64 is a couple of bottles of Vargellas. I took a quick look at my tasting notes from the last 5 years and see that I've only drunk 7 different ports from that vintage - colheitas from Dalva, Krohn (the white one), and Noval and vintage ports from Fonseca Guimaraens, Malvedos, Nacional and Vargellas.

Rare stuff - but surprisingly and consistently tasty.

I've tried the Krohn white, Noval, and a Dow Grand Reserve and all were excellent. (The Dow somewhat less than the Krohn white and Noval.) I have a small supply of each of those. I'll have to look around for the Dalva.

I haven't tried a Ruby from 1964 that I can remember, but I have one bottle each of the Fonseca Guimaraens, Graham Malvedos, Noval Nacional, and Taylor Vargellas. And I'm pretty sure that 3 of those 4 were came to me via assists from London. (I can't remember for sure where the Vargellas came from.)
