Opening Anything Special for Easter?

Post by John M. »

Happy Easter to all who celebrate the Holiday. Lots of my family coming together.

I will be opening a 1970 Grahams. The bottle looks brand new and perfect (I have another just like it).
Any Port in a storm!

Yum! I haven't received my auction lot from Zachy's yet, otherwise I'd probably be doing the same thing.

Not sure what I'll open yet, but I'm sure there'll be something. My wife's family aren't big Port drinkers, so it'll mostly just be for me. Might even just wait until Sunday night.

Friends are making raviolis, and the theme will be Italian, so it may be Recioto instead of Port.

This weekend I'm planning on opening a 1920 Croft for my mother-in-laws birthday.

You must really like your mother-in-law, haha.

I'll either be going with a '70 Dow or '85 Fonseca. YTD

I got my eyes on a 1985 Ramos Pinto.
Then again, if I go into my cellar I might be tempted to open something completely different.

Having a number of people over on Sunday for several reasons, one being Easter, one my bday, and one a friend flying in to town, so lots of Portuguese wines and some Port will be flowing. Not sure yet, as tomorrow I'll sort out what I'm pulling from the cellar. Will update here shortly.

If I go fancy, it will be a '63 Taylor.

Some tentative things planned so far...

2007 Quinta do Mouro Douro DOC
2007 Pombal do Vesuvio Douro
1977 Gould Campbell VP
and a couple other non-Portuguese things.

For dry wines:

1968 Louis Martini - CA Mountain Private Reserve Pinot
1967 Guigal Hermitage

The pinot looks incredible; can't wait to try both.

Lol...she's turning 94, so I figured that was reason enough to open something special.

Indeed! Reaching 94 is no small feat, I hope she can attribute it to regular port consumption and give us some hope :-).

Opened a 2001 Louis Bernard Châteauneuf-du-Pape magnum and then a 2006 Ca' Rugate Recioto della Valpolicella L'Eremita for dessert. While my cellar is filled with Port, I do have some other dessert wines like Banyuls and Recioto. I open those on occasion and am usually reminded that I like Port more. I still prefer Port, but this Recioto was really nice, better than several older ones I've opened recently, and a great QPR.

So my above list got turned upside down with more than expected people arriving. a redo was in order of what was to be served....

Lallier Champagne NV
2009 Niepoort Tiara Douro
2009 Quinta do Portal Reserve Douro
1995 Cinnabar Cabernet
1994 Napa cab (I forgot already)
1996 Quevedo Colheita (Mag)
1972 Dow's Colheita (Bottled 1985)
20 Year Villar d. Allen Tawny Port
and I'm missing something else or two....

I was wrong...

1967 Jadot Charmes Chambertin, 1976 Ernst Faust Spatlese, and 1985 Rufino Ducale Riserva Chianti... For Port it was 1997 Souza Vintage.

Odd when vintage port is newest vintage of evening... [shrug.gif]
