For The Love Of Port

This was a great thread but it is time to update this with newer participants and even the old guard likely has changed their daily sippers!

Wine is the daily tipple in our household, and it is always different and dependant on what we have for dinner. If we're having something spicy that is not wine friendly then it is beer, and that too changes all the time, from light and crisp as an aperitif, or something hoppy or dark, depending on the food?

During the summer our aperitif of choice had been KWV Pale Dry Sherry or Cinzano, depending on the mood and what was already open. We went through a lot of them. However I can say that in the last month or so, especially as the cold weather has set in, we have been drinking a lot of LBV port, in particular the '07 and '08 Cockburn which we bought a lot of as it was being cleared out at C$14 to 15 which is a fantastic price for Edmonton. The '07 Dow LBV would have been included in the daily tippling but we only found 3 bottles of it so I'm' being carful with it.

I can also add that we've been having some Pellegrini Marsala I.P. Fine as well as Graham's 10 Year Old.

It was 1983 Smith Woodhouse in 375s and an occasional 1980 Gould Campbell, also in 375. But those are nearly all gone now. I recently purchased a bit of 1997 Niepoort in 375, but I'm afraid that may still be too young, so I'm still searching for something else in a small size at a low price to fit the bill. Since it is cold now, I'll probably have more occasions to open full bottles, and 1977 Warres might be my most frequent wine of the season.

My current top three are;

Fonseca Bin 27 (got a bunch of bottles for next to nothing on close out so it's been my house Port)
Ferreira 20 year tawny Port

other than that, my Port drinking has been all over the place this year with no real theme. I have bought a bunch of 1995 Quinta do Tedo VP for my 'house VP' at the moment, and still have a few left.

I suppose I could say that "some tawny" is the answer, but that's not very precise. I've opened 20-yr olds, 30-yr olds, and a variety of Colheitas from recent FTLOP purchases. I've also sprinkled in various LBVs over that time.

To echo some of the older posts, though, my true "daily sipper" at this point is tea. Stupid work frowns on drinking Port in my office during business hours.

OK---really my go to ports for casual drinking are

1. Whatever's on sale--usually Cockburns Ruby Reserve for $13 but just had a QH LBV from Trader Joe's--very inexpensive and easy drinking
2. Dow's LBVs
3. Fonseca Bin 27 is a staple.

We use to drink port at work all the time, but new CEO changed that one...

For everyday drinking (and I mean every day) it depends on what I am having for lunch - bacon and eggs do not lend themselves to wine, but a couple of glasses of cardboard cask red or white say 4 or 5 days a week, otherwise instant coffee. I sell herbal teas but do not often drink them.

At night, always Portuguese, red or white, cask again on many occasions, or a bottle recently purchased as a trial or one from the cellar to check development, frequently several bottles open at once for comparisons. The main course is always followed by cheese and a Ruby, currently Offley or Ferreira (but will change if I have any more corked in the near future) and again other Rubies tried frequently for comparison. After that nuts (currently Californian almonds because my own supplies of nuts are presently insufficient) with Moscatel, either Spanish or Sétubal, with yet again comparisons from the cellar on a regular basis. Special occasions, as many in the year as I can think of, I move up market, but that is not the question being asked.

If he puts a dabble of Port in his tea, would that count?

My everyday Port could be a; Niepoort, Taylor, Croft, Krohn, Borges, Dows, Offley, Sandeman, Kopke.....But with an age. I open a bottle every friday/saturday or more if we have guests over.

When I buy Ports, 90% of the lot, is with the old IVP- selo. Or older Colheitas.

My first experience with port, where very old bottles, and I got hooked on that special taste.

Some weeks ago I opend a bottle of Pocas Junior 40 year old, bottled in 1984. And the bottle was emty after a few hours.
One friday later, I opend a White Quinta do Mourão, and it took me a whole two days to finish the bottle....
