Now this is a good new one - I need to find a local drinking buddy so I can use this one! Of course, as you allude to Derek, it likely has a lifespan of a few short months/purchases...

And using the "I got this case for over 1/2 off retail at auction" only lasts for a couple times too

Lack of money and lack of storage are my problems. I put a lot of money into Port when I first got interested... bought 3 fridges and 400-odd bottles... but now the fridges are full and there are boxes stacked in the front hallway. To keep the dogs out of the living room. No really, it's not because I have nowhere else to put them.

So this year my New Year's Resolution is to drink as much out of my cellar as I buy to put in it. So far, so good, but I'm already hedging. I bought 3 x D80 and have technically only drank one bottle to offset the purchase (a G66), but one of the D80s is scheduled for a tasting as is a G83. So provided I don't buy anything until the end of April, the ledger will be clean again.

Funding is always an issue for me, but at the moment storage space is the bigger one. I'm afraid what will happen when my cellar is done and I see all the empty spaces in the racks.

Well , since my post in 2007 , the only difference is I now forget to bring my SAQ bag and return from the SAQ with another ( 1.00$ )
I get the double whamy look . . .

Same. Storage is now becoming my biggest issue. I'm trying to drink down a bit to make room as stopping all buying is futile lol!

I think its 3 different things for me.
1. Prioritization against other wine purchases -
2. Drinking window vs cellaring time. I bought some '07 VPs when I decided I really should have some good port in the cellar, but didn't fully internalize the epic time scale between release and when it is 'ready'. (And I thought Barolo was a commitment). I wised up eventually and started buying older ports too, but then I obsess a little about waiting until 2014 to open the 1964s.
3. Occasions to open - My wife who's parents are from Portugal no less did not impart to their daughter the love of port in a way that helps me open bottles when its just the two of us at home.

I think this is really the biggest of my 3 issues, the others being storage (I've moved a lot) and budget (I'm not in a particularly lucrative line of work, and I'm 24).

The fiancé actually really enjoys a good port, especially when I whip up a dark chocolate torte or something to go with, and puts up with the wine fridges and budget issues, but we both fret about opening a bottle anytime other than a Friday before a long lazy weekend or in company, as the opportunities for consumption sometimes hit a brick wall without much notice. :-(.

I honestly think we sometimes worry too much about finishing a bottle of port quickly. Last night I finished off a bottle of Fonseca Crusted 2001 that had been opened 10 days earlier. Due to work, chores and family commitments I didn't drink more than a glass or two about every other night. The port was kept in a decanter in a garage that is about 10C (50F). By the 10th day the flavour profile had become dominated by stewed fruit and was very different from when just opened, but I really enjoyed following the way it changed. I'm quite happy drinking a bottle of port over a week or two like this.
