You and your buddies better practice up later this month when you head over there!
Like a virgin, actually, you still need to try your very first one. :joker:

Though francesinha does not pair well with Port, it can be fun as a sideline event of the Port Harvest Tour team!
There is another top5 francesinhas' restaurant, named Locanda, but is located 10 miles aways from the city center, in Gaia-Canelas. The logistic would be more difficult but the francesinhas are made in a wood stove...
All the three we are considering are close between each other, so we have to think about the pros and cons.

Hello Roy and Oscar
Ithink that it will be interesting if we also taste the "original francesinha" from what I heard, that is in
Regaleira restaurant, in Oporto downtown, it started in the 1950(s) with an emigrant portuguese man called Daniel Silva, that has returned from France.
They still make the same recipe.
If you want, Roy, we have one more for the

Awards list

Yes, it is true. I have not tasted a francesinha yet. But I am quite sure that will change in the near future

Yes, after 5 years of taking groups to explore Port ... I have failed in my duty to ensure everyone tries Francesinha at least once. I am so ashamed. :wall:
I am seriously considering doing an afternoon of visiting a bunch of restaurants in Porto to check out Francesinha sandwiches. Now, I just need to convince the folks coming on the trip, that this is a good idea and worthy of missing one visit in Gaia!
I have a feeling that will result in

Yes, it was sounding like a great idea until that part about missing a visit in VndG.

The big secret is in the sauce and in the ingredients freshness...

Andy just came back and after all his bravado here, not a single Francesinha was tasted in his entire week in Porto.
Since we've done away with the pillory and stockade, I think I shall leave the decision on his punishment to the rest of you!

We have?
I'd have thought this was the perfect punishment.

Gustavo tried to get us to have some, but we had run out of time after such a massive tasting at Graham's and we had to head to the train station to catch our train. I was very bummed as I really wanted to try it but time just didn't permit it. It was the last train back to Regua and if we missed it, we would be in a world of trouble. I'm sure finding a cab at 10pm on a Sunday night to drive 7 of us from Vila Nova d. Gaia to Regua would not have been easy. So my punishment was the sadness in not being able to taste this little gem I've heard so much about. Hopefully in October

That's the punishment. No Francesinha for you in October!
Just kidding. In fact, I will make sure you get to try it at least once!

Not something I have seen in SE Mass or of Azores heritage. Sure looks amazing though. Put linguica in anything and it's a home run!

Goncalo,
I have to ask you a favor. Many nights I come to this thread just to stare at your picture for a moment. I can literally taste that picture of yours and it has my salivary glands in submission.
Speaking of submission, that is my segue to asking you the favor: please upload that photo to PORTraits or send me the original so I can do it for you. Thanks!

I just returned from an intense work-related, yet very enjoyable, trip to Lisbon and was able to taste some fantastic wines and food. One evening after work I was returning to my apartment from the Pombal Metro Stop and spotted what seemed to be an interesting, yet somewhat bizarre restaurant. Being the wine geek that I am, I was intrigued because I saw a huge decanter at one of the tables in the restaurant.
Nonetheless, the name of the establishment is FROG. It is located in the lower-level of a galleria on the Rua Braamcamp between Pombal and the Largo do Rato (below Telepizza). Aside from several types of Francesinhas with three options of sauce (mild, medium, and hot) they also serve grilled foods and lighter sandwiches. After doing a google search and reading several blogs about the best Francesinha options in Lisboa, I decided that one night I would give FROG a visit.
I must admit since I was working a great deal, I didn't get to the restaurant until about 10:30pm, yet it was still busy, especially with take away orders. The francesinha that I ordered, bife with queijo, linguiça, etc., hit the spot with dare I say - A nice Imperial. Nonetheless, when I returned to the apartment I had a nice bottle of 1997 Krohn waiting for me...
If you are in Lisbon and having Francesinha withdrawal, then FROG might be worth the trip for a casual or late dinner/snack.

M Edward,
Thanks for the info, it's always great when people list new restaurants. Glad the food was good and I hope that Krohn's was even better.
BTW, I've also sent you an email.

Hi Marco,
Great write up but I would really like to hear more about your Francesinha experience, specifically the dish itself. Which sauce did you pick, etc. Any photos taken of the sandwich?

I am going to make it my personal mission to take Andy to Cafe Majestic in October and enjoy viewing his very first time having a Francesinha sandwich. In fact, maybe I will video tape it for
