What Portuguese wines have you opened this week

Post by Mike K. »

So need a nice Other Portuguese Fortified Wines sub-forum.

Tonight I opened a Carcavelos Villa Oeiras 2005 Colheita. Very nice and something completely different. Could be compared to a white tawny port.

WOW! A rare Portuguese wine to see in the US. I really like this wine. I don't think that I have not had one that old! Jealous! :D

1. I agree on the need for another sub-forum, or at least a thread.
2. I love the Oeiras Carcavelos (perhaps more than white Port). But I wish they put that in a normal shaped bottle. I can't easily bring one of those home in my wine suitcase.

+1

I was originally going to pass on this bottle, due to the shape and weight. (Plus its big wooden presentation case)
But a few more pours of their lineup caused all reason to fade and I assured myself I could stuff it in my suitcase. :)
Very glad I did, but makes it impossible to bring home multiples.

2007 Vallado Touriga Nacional. That showed horribly. I didn't get any TCA on it, nor did anyone else, but it was just flat. No fruit, no complexity, nada, zilch. I've had this wine before and this was not normal by any means. :(

Wow! I'll have to open mine and check it to see how it's doing.

Pretty sure it was just an off/bad bottle. Never had one like it before. Perhaps very low level TCA, enough to rob it of fruit but not enough to really show itself on the nose??

Yeah, that's certainly possible. I don't think I've ever had a corked Vallado, so that would be a first.

An excellent wine (as usual). Needs a few years or a long decant for it to resolve some of the tannins. Not as heavy as some years, but comes across as really quite balanced.

2004 Crasto Reserva - Better after 1 hour decant. Not going anywhere quickly.
