Decant: 5½ hours - Tasted after allowing time for the wine to stand in the decanter. Very little change in colour, still sparkling in its clarity. Nose of bright toffee and treacle, still a bit dusty but lifted by a nice lemon tint. Sweet and thick into the mouth. Lively, lemon juice and treacle with layers of liquorice and aniseed. Beautiful balance except for the spirit which protrudes a little too much. Tannins show through, but only on the start of the aftertaste, which is dominated by aniseed and fennel but has some very subtle underflavours such as Turkish Delight and rose water. A little short.
So far, this wine rates above the median tasting experience for the year and as one of 2006's top 25%, but probably not in the top 15%. The wine is unlikely to improve over the next 10 years but has enough acidity and sugar to hold it nicely through another decade without any serious deterioration. On this basis the wine rates 8/8 on the Tom scale. 93 points
