Decant: 5 hours - A half bottle from my cellar, first acquired in the mid-late '80's from a wine merchant in Chelsea who was selling a distressed parcel of half bottles at £2 per half. Has lain in my cellar ever since. The bottle had been carried from the UK in my hold baggage to Boston and had been allowed only 30 minutes to settle before being decanted. The cork was slightly protruding, soft but appeared to be in good condition and with no signs of any wine having leaked. The cork came out in one piece but the wine had to be filtered through tissue paper because of the amount of fine sediment in suspension.
A first sniff revealed a very dusty nose with lots of heat - but at least the wine is clearly not corked!
This had been decanted for around 5 hours by the time we came to drink it. Deep red in colour, no youthful purple but no hint of brown. Distinctive rich, sweet morello cherry nose but with a dusty hint. Sweet into the mouth with nice complexity in the mid-palate. Alchol well integrated by tannins still surprisingly grippy and giving a dry finish. I was slightly disappointed by the length but thought this was a decent wine. 86/100 or 4/5.
