From Wine Library.....

I got such good feedback to yesterday's email advertising our highly valued magnums that I have created a supplemental list today; this time offering magnums that are significantly harder to find and arguably better deals.

Due to the limited number of Mags, please email all orders directly to me for ensured confirmation: dbulluck@winelibrary.com

Fonseca Vintage Port 1994 1.5L
Super Sale - $439.99
Reg. - $599.99
"Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it's probably even better than that classic vintage--more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it's a long-term, great Port. Best after 2012. 8,000 cases made."

A wine I would love to have more of, especially in magnum, but something like twice the price per bottle that I paid when I last bought earlier this year.

That's a good price in the U.S. if you want a magnum, but still a 30-50% premium over the price of two 750s on this side of the pond.

Sounds pricey to me, but each to their own.

Yes--it just seems magnums aren't usually a bargain in the port world. Nonetheless, I got the info on the sale and posted for all of my FTLOP friends..... [friends.gif]

That is a staggeringly high premium. Is it really possible to buy 3 x 750ml bottles of VP for the price of 1 magnum in the US? I'm no expert on the subject but I am almost certain that in the UK the price of magnums v bottles works out to be as much as makes no difference the same per case of 9 litres. Half bottle cases cost slightly more.

Over here it depends a bit on the Port. But it isn't uncommon for magnums to be 3x the price of 750s, and it is fairly uncommon for them to be "merely" 2x the price of a 750. In my experience, 375s carry about a 15% price premium over the equivalent volume in 750s.

3x's? Yikes! I own only 15-20 magnum's, but never paid more than 15% above the 750 price. Then again that is why I own them as they weren't much more.

John,

Thanks for posting about this, regardless of price someone out there may be seeking this and has no issue with paying a bit more.
