1991 Croft Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (9/18/2010)
A spectacular bottle. Dark color. A really inviting nose of black fruit. Black and sour cherry palate with a dose of chocolate. Really suave. The palate is round and the structure has backed off enough that you can really drink this. Absolutely no heat at all. This is in a very good spot if you like your port young and fruity. It's not yet showing any secondary development. Just delicious and a real sleeper. This can still be picked up for a reasonable price. This must be the greatest Croft between 1945 and 2003. (93 pts.)

That is some statement. I'd trade my case of '91 for '63 if you want :P

Ha! Yes, that's my opionion. Others like the 1963 or the 1994. Maybe I haven't had a great bottle of the 1963. It's always been a bit too spirity for me.

I really think David is spot on with his comment which is exactly what I said about it in my TOP 12 article some years ago. The 1991 Croft, properly decanted, is a beautiful Port. I need to revisit the 1945 again. One can never have enough experiences with that stellar VP. [cheers.gif]

I'm not sure wheather or not David is using an inclusive date range here? If so, I will gladly seek out a case of Croft 1991 and swap it for a case of Croft 1945 [dance2.gif]

David,
I agree with you on the "suave" descriptor for the '91 Croft. I too found this to have a 'dark' side with very finely polished tannins that lurk in the background.

Derek,
LOL! The dates were excluding the end points. I think the 1945 and the 2003 are superior wines.

I have a fond place for the the 1991 and yes, it was probably the finest Croft since 1945. I think that the ante has been upped further in the past decade, but at the time of the 1991's production, the 1945 was the closest great Croft. The 1963 is good but not in the same league, imo.
