Ramos Pinto Collector -- reserve ruby port

Pop 'n Pour. Dark ruby color, not entirely brilliant. The label says this Port is not filtered. I bought this today, it laid in my car for some 30 miles of driving, perhaps getting moderately shaken. What would happen if the wine settled and was decanted? I don't know.

Some heat on the taste, but manageable. Also, this heat dissipated as I drank through half the bottle. Fair balance, moderate sweetness. Fair fruit, some blackberry taste. Light bouquet. This tasted better on the second evening -- better fruit, smoother, better nose. Consequently I have increased my score from 85 to 87. My general feeling is that I liked this perhaps better than the other reserve rubies I have sampled -- Six Grapes, Bin 27, and Warrior. I intend to revisit both these other reserve rubies and Collector this winter with a view to confirming/correcting this impression. 87/100.

This Port went well with figs, stilton cheese, and walnuts. The walnuts in particular was a happy match, and the Port showed the most fruit in combination with the walnuts. I was quite pleased with this reserve ruby port. It was more satisfying and less coarse than other ruby ports I have had over the last year. I tried another Collector ruby Port last year but did not respond to it as favorably then as now.

I have resampled another bottle of this recently (11/27/2010). I found this a bit more tannic and/or astringent than the earlier bottle. I think I spied some very fine sediment in the remainder of the wine poured out at the end of the bottle. Some very fine sediment strewn through the port could account for this tannic/astringent character. I have another bottle of this stashed, I'll sample it after first allowing sediment to settle and decanting the whole bottle. Perhaps that will make a difference.
