Italian red wine with 17.5 % alcohol

Three years ago I got a bottle of red wine from Sardinia from a Italian business friend. He talked highly about the wine. Emmy and I had for dinner and at the end of the meal (and of the bottle) we could feel this was not a normal strength red wine. A close look showed that this 2004 Dettori was showing 17.0 % alc content on the lable. We were very pleased with the wine, it was actually elegant in spite of the high alcohol.
Dettori has not been seen here in Norway until some months ago when the special shop of the wine monopoly brought in some bottles. I purchased one bottle of the 2007 Dettori Chimbanta with 17.5 % alc content. This time we did not like it so much. The high alcohol was extremely strong in the mouth like asian hot spices. Furthermore the wine was slightly unclear like som unfiltered wines can be, and I think a bit out of balance.
I read the other thread about alc content, and Roy's view that there are many variation is true when it comes to our two Dettori-bottles. On the bottle it says "not having used syntetic chemicals, no added yeast, enzymes, or all other aids winemaking, not filtered, not clarified, no barriques. Every bottle can be different. Sorry, but we don't follow the market, we produce wines that we like, wines from our culture. They are what they are, and not what you want them to be."
Quiote a strong statement towards the end. Unless there are many people buying their bottles, I think also the economic realities will hit them one day!
