1947 Sandeman Vintage Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto (8/27/2011)
Very similar profile to the previous botte, but with much greater depth. Unfortunately, the spirit was just too fierce this time, even with prolonged air. Otherwise this could have been a classic bottle, and it was still tantalizingly young and rich. No score. Oporto bottled, top shoulder fill, embossed wax capsule with a branded but unusually short cork that was slightly raised.

Hi Tom,

Did you check in on this a 2nd or 3rd day? Unless the fruit has receded to the point that the spirit is dominating and that can be from oxidation as well as old age (but sometimes oxidation from a failed cork) then on occasion ... these hot old bottles occasionally can surprise by having the heat disappear a couple of days later. I've only seen this happen a few times with older bottles, but just wondering if you happened to check back just to make sure?

Roy, I did check back the next day and two days later. The alcohol had in fact simmered down, but the Port had lost a lot of its flavor too...

Damn, I hate when that happens!
