Opened to celebrate getting my new job at Microsoft. This is my last bottle... I need to get some more!
1991 Dona Matilde Colheita
bottled 2009
Color: medium dark tawny with orange overtones and red highlights. Fairly dense for a tawny, but nowhere near opaque.
Nose: lots of vanilla and caramel followed by ripe apricots and some high-toned alcohol.
Palate: smooth and creamy and medium sweet, with a nice full body. Good acidity and maybe just a hint of tannins. Good fruit flavor, though not many different ones. Some light brown sugar and very mellow citrus. Maybe a little bit of butterscotch, too. A little more tartness than I remember from previous bottles, but it needed a little bit more of that.
Finish: long and smooth with echoes of both the nose and the palate. Tails off with a hint of apple.
Score: 94 points. This is really outstanding stuff, and the price is hard to beat! This bottle impressed me much more than the last one, probably due to just that extra touch of tartness. The last one was great - I think a lot of tawnies go too far toward tart - but this one seems to have hit the target just that much better.
