1980 Fonseca Vintage Port

From an informal gathering of east and west coast FTLOP'ers at the Palm in NYC on 3/9/12.
Light burgundy in color. On the nose I got notes of caramel, oak and candied cherry fruit - slightly medicinal in character but not in a bad way. Light, pretty maraschino cherry fruit and a touch of spice on the palate - sweet and silky without much tannin left but still holding together nicely with very good balance and a medium-long finish. A very enjoyable, fully mature VP that should hold for a while but should probably be drunk in the short term. I was surprised by this one as I had always heard lackluster things about this particular wine and it turned out to be quite good. 91pts
