I wouldn't object at all to paying that kind of money for wine of exceptionally high quality. Something tells me however, this bottle doesn't fit into that category.

It's one thing to offer one's shares of stock at a price that's pretty far away from the market in the unlikely event that someone will actually lift the offer, but this is just nuts.

Tasty but simple port I have had once. No, I would not pay that much for it. If under $100 then let's talk.

Just a little bit on pricing here, Moses. Would you still pay just under $100 given this list of prices for 1970 VPs in general? http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/vintage+port/1970/usa I can't speak to the condition of the bottles offered on that list or about what fine print lurks behind each of these offerings, but I think I'd need to go lower to be a buyer of that bottle.

Just on coolness of the bottle alone is worth a $15 bump.

Considering that's 10x what I paid (each) for the 6 bottles I bought a few years ago... no, I absolutely would not pay that asking price. In fact, if anyone here WOULD pay that asking price, I'll save you the commission and sell you one of the two bottles that I still have.

For what it's worth, that bottle was not sold in the week it was listed, and has been relisted at the same price with still no takers. There are actually two auctions of this wine offered for $295. I would not hold my breath waiting for activity on either of them.

Bonjour Luc, all of those wines seem more attractive to me, both in terms of price and quality. Perhaps some of the winebid.com consignors have unrealistic expectations of the value of their wines.

If i may be permitted an aside, I could not help but notice the 2003 Carruades de Lafite, the second wine of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, is also being offered at winebid.com for close to $295. I purchased two bottles of this at the Costco northeast of Los Angeles CA in 2006 for $45 apiece. While is a very fine wine, there is no way I would even consider paying anywhere near $295 for it today. Oddly enough, the auction page declares its market value to be $320.

All I can say is , I always thought that the SAQ was the only institution with a distorted view of reality .

Ouch - that makes the Quebec prices scary! Granted, residents of British Columbia are subject to similar draconianism.

Might be a bit on the high side now (though significantly less than it would have been a 12-18 months ago), but you won't find it at retail in the UK / Europe for much less. Quite a few people i know made a packet selling off their old carruades last year - unfortunately i didn't have the foresight to buy it in the first place!

I'm still storing about 3 cases of 2004 Bordeaux crus bought en primeur, including a half case of Les Forts de Latour.

PS - the whole Bordeaux market scares the heck out of me, except for the satellite appelations. Even the 2002 La Mission Haut Brion, admittedly not a great year, could once be found for around $80. Things have changed a lot in Bordeaux since 2004.

The positive side of that, oddly enough, has forced a shift to looking for quality wines elsewhere that are more reasonable, including Burgundy of all places.
