Not the greatest price but this store always seems to come up with well stored bottles--yet there is no story on provenance here.

Dow's was one of the first Port companies to recognise the importance of vineyard ownership in the Douro. Quinta do Bomfim, one of the finest properties in the Upper Douro, was acquired by the company in 1896 and is the oldest quinta in continuous ownership.

The Quinta do Bomfim

All of the property is A-rated, the highest possible quality designation. Virtually the entire Quinta is now planted in varietal blocks, allowing each variety to be picked and vinified separately. All grapes are picked by hand.

Vintage Porto

Dear Wine Lovers

Dow is one of the very best Port Houses and they have the reputation of holding their wines until they are ready for consumption. When we were told that they were bringing the 1999 Vintage from their best Quinta, Bomfim, we were stoked. Our expectations were exceeded. This is a classic. Butterscotch and plum on the nose lead to a full-bodied Port with caramel, plum, sweet dark cherries and firm but fine tannins. Delicious now, it will have a wonderful life of at least 10-15 more years. Frankly, this Port is a bargain! Jump on it now!

at the prestigious The Bomfim is technically what is called a "Single Quinta" Vintage Port. Bomfim is basically a single vineyard. If the overall Port vintage was good enough to be declared the single quinta would have been used in the flagship vintage port. However, 1999 was an uneven vintage and for Dow only their best vineyard "Bomfim" made vintage quality wine. The result was that a small amount of extremely beautiful Port was made and we are offering it to you. Take advantage of the fact that the 1999 Bomfim is a fantastic value. Because it wasn't a generally declared vintage the price is much lower.

For some reason there aren't many reviews of the 1999 Bomfim online. Our in house PLKS rating is 92-94, it is that good! Decanter named it a Top Ten single quinta and it tied for the second highest score. It received the Gold Medal at the prestigious International Wine Challenge in London.

To further aid your understanding of this Port and why it could produce a vintage when it wasn't a declared vintage keep in mind that Bomfim is Dow's very best vineyard. It is all rated "A", the highest possible rating. Bomfim was acquired by Dow in 1896 and is the oldest continuously owned Port vineyard. Think about it this way, if overall Pomerol did not have a great vintage it is still a lock bet that Petrus still made a great wine!

This is the first Port we have sent out in a long time. Most just don't stand out. The Bomfim stands out like a supernova. We have our allocation in stock so get yours before someone beats you to it!

Cheers,
Skip

That doesn't sound like a bad price at all to me at first glance.
