- 1980 Ferreira Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (5/26/2013)
The storage of this wine was questionable, as the cork had slipped down the neck and into the wine, although I don't believe it was totally submerged, as the wine was still quite drinkable... or perhaps the capsule kept the wine from oxidizing? The color was a medium to light ruby color with some browning on the rim. While very mature in flavor (with dried florals, dried fruits and nut skins), this was still lively on the palate. A hint of "tawny-ness", perhaps due to some minor oxidation. Although probably not a pristine example, it remained an elegant and enjoyable port. (88 pts.)

Given what you mention, (and the fact that I happen to really love this VP) you really owe it to yourself to find a pristine bottle of this juice. It is THAT good.

All of my 1980 Ferreiras have loose corks.

I would probably open one and if they show like Marco's bottle then I'd drink them rather soon. Wait much longer and you may have a VP that's gone tawny.

Down to about 3-4 bottles and it's been a mixed bag of perfect to 30 year tawny... Sean and I have the elusive OWC's that were shipped and stored upright...

I have one more, from the same source as this one. I should probably check in on it sooner rather than later.

Had one not too long ago at Ferreira's lodge that was bright ruby and singing. A beauty when stored well and cork is right.
