For The Love Of Port

From a 1/2 bottle. Decanted 8 hours; cork came out nicely--could have used a few more hours in decanter. Light brick red (lighter than the 83 tasted along side--the 83 looked more youthful). Nose offered crushed grass with a touch of spice. The taste had many different elements: touch of chocolate, a rather sweet and spicy quality. The finish was moderate and gave a strawberry candy finish. While very good, it seemed inferior to the 83.

Have never someone say that comparing the two. Usually it's the '85 that is held in higher regard. That being said, I have never had both side-by-side.

I got the bottles from WineBid within the last 6 months and reading between the lines I think the same source. Still, the assessment on the two as compared was universal (just four of us)--the 83 just seemed to shine.

1983 Dow is a little harder to find the 1985, FWIW

I like the '83 SW over the '85, and the same goes for my experience with Grahams. Checking my notes I've been underwhelmed by both of the Dows, but perhaps it is time to give the '83 another try.

I like the Dow's 1983 and think the 1985 Dow's is every bit as good and likely the longer lasting of the two. The 1985 is still very immature given its age and a real bargain for the price.

I prefer the 1983 Dow to the 1985. Although I have had a few badly corked 1983 Dow's, most of them are just fine. I strongly prefer the 1985 Grahams over the 1983. I will say that the 1985 Grahams has been in a bit of a funk over the last few years, it does seem to be emerging nicely now. I will have to dig through and find my stash of 1985 Grahams and pop one. As for Smith Woodhouse, I prefer the 1985, but the 1983 is very good as well. I would be happy with either one!
