24 hours after decanting: Dark red, some paleness at the rim where there is distinct attenuation. Typical Taylor glycerine tears. Quite raisiny on the nose which shows good persistence and underlying complexity. The raisiny character carries through to the palate which shows a pleasing winey character with tingling acidity. Good concentration of dark fruit flavour. Overall a complex wine which makes quite a forceful impression. This bottle seems rather less evolved than one consumed earlier this month, but my general impression is that this is probably one to drink over the next few years rather than hold. There is not really the intensity to suggest a long term future, but that is not to deny the pleasure which this wine can give now. 90+

Nice TN, thanks. A good vintage and one that seems to have gone from a slow ager to a quicker ager in recent years. At 18 years old some of the VP's from this year are now starting to get the secondary notes and are more evolved than those from some surrounding years. I've generally not been disappointed in this vintage, but like your assessment of this Port, I generally don't see these making old bones.

If you ever get a chance to taste the Vargellas Vinha Velha from 1995, the difference is like night and day. Similar flavor profile, but that is where the comparison ends. The '95 Vargellas VV VP is a beauty and was the first vintage in which this new designation appeared. It originally was sold up in Canada and did not makes its way down to the USA (commercially) for a few years.

Had this a couple of times. While a solid VP, I've always scratched my head as to why they released this and why from this vintage. It's a very good Port, better than most from the vintage. But the quality in no way matches the premium this VP commanded when released. I've always thought this to be the weakest VVV they've released.
