1987 Niepoort colheita, bottled in 2004.
I don't drink that much of colheita's, but as I understood they don't last too long in the bottle, I thought why not open it now?
It has a lovely amber color. There are some sweet caramel and nutty tones, it is well balanced and the aftertaste is medium. After three days it developed more towards roasted walnuts and some bitter tones like grapefruit or orangezestes, the aftertaste is dominated by them which I personaly don't like that much.
I'm not sure this is it for me, besides I prefer vintage ports.

This is actually a pretty nice Niepoort Colheita. But you may want to try another vintage/producer before you give up on Colheitas. Additionally, although there is no right or wrong answer to this ... it really depends on who is talking at the moment ... but Dirk Niepoort is of the opinion that Colheitas DO actually improve in the bottle, at least he believes his own bottlings do.

I do have some Kopke Colheita's in my cellar, so for sure I will try one in some time...

Just for interest sake, would you let us know what you own? It would be fun to discuss which we'd love to hear your opinion on, that would give you the best chance to discern if this category of Port is really to your liking or not.

Left it for two days in the fridge, had it yesterday and today and I must say it showed (or I just liked it?) much better. The orangezeste is still around, but not disturbing me anymore. Sweet caramel and toffee on the palate, fullbodied and a nice long (caramel) aftertaste.

If you are more vintage lover, you could try younger Colheita that shows more red fruit. Niepoort is offering the 2005 at the moment.
