Clear the Shelves - 25% off at Sainsbury's

Obviously, just for the British posters.

Just in case any of you missed my post in Crusted Port. Sainsbury's currently have 25% when you buy 6 or more bottles of Champagne, Sparkling Wine and Fortified Wine. This brings the price of Malvedos 1996 down to £16.50, Fonseca Guimaraens 1987 to £15, Sainsbury's Quinta do Crasto VP to £15. Champagne prices are good as well.

Having just paid £7.50 for Graham's Crusted Port, I'm not complaining. I already have a few of the Malvedos and Guimaraens.

Oooooohhh - I've been moved. I've not had this happen here before and it's quite creepy. I feel all woozy and slightly dirty.

Anybody picked up bargains yet?

I picked up 6 Q d Crasto and 6 Croft Platinum Reserve.

The Croft was on sale at 50% Off (£10.99 down to £5.49) - with the extra 25% off for buying 6 these cost me £4 per bottle

I appreciate that Reserve is not to everyone's taste but at that price I couldn't resist it :?

I called into Sainsburys this morning on my way in to work and wondered where all the Guimaraens 1987 had gone, now I know. Just not sure how well it would have withstood being upright on the top shelf in a supermarket for the best part of 12 months.

Still, I am very tempted to pick up six bottles of the Crusted or the Traditional LBVs.

Hmmm.

Alex,

Are you not tempted by the Crasto? It can't have been on the shelf for more than a month so should be OK for both storage and drinking.

Thanks for the hot tip. I picked up:

2 x Graham Crusted 2000 at £7.50 each

2 x Quinta do Crasto '96 at £15 each

2 x Guimaraens '87 at £15 each.

I would have bought more of the Guimaraens but I just bought 24 bottles at auction. I wouldn't worry too much about the 'top shelf' factor if you go to a large Sainsburys - believe me, these guys have sharp stock control now and a fast turnover and are unlikely to let something fester on valuable shelf space for more than a few weeks. Your local corner shop may be a different story...

My intuition says the Graham will turn out to be the best bargain. Thanks for the heads up.

KillerB, you are a bad, bad man - I was so disappointed to read of your low willpower that I had to rush back to Sainsbury today and pick-up:

12 x Croft Platinum Reserve

7 x Quinta do Crasto 1996 (1 to drink and 6 to keep)

4 x Graham's Crusted 2000 and

1 x Taylor's 10 Yr Old Tawny (a gift for a mate)

This was to add to the 6 x Quinta do Crasto and 6 x Croft Platinum Reserve I picked-up on Wednesday

Off to Tesco tomorrow to see what they have :P

Derek - the shelves at Tesco were loaded down with Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta de Vargellas 1996. I had to limit myself as I'm about to move house with the space and financial restrictions that entails. I could have done with these offers being a couple of weeks later.

I understand the point of getting all the Croft, I may go and get another half-dozen myself.

Just to show that I am not selfish I decided to avoid the port shelf at Tesco and picked-up 18 bottles of Wolf Blass Chardonay for Jo at £3 per bottle instead of the normal £8 - I think this more than makes up for the 36 bottles of port I bought for myself at Sainsbury :P

Agreed - after all, she will definitely drink some of your Port but I doubt that you'll be having too much WB Chard. You are obviously a very reasonable man Derek.

I will be having no WBC and Jo will drink it all, probably as Spritzer  - so £3 a bottle is about as good as it needs to be :D

I hope she doesn't drink it all before the offer runs out.
