With preparations in full swing for the festive season and as the the cold nights draw in, what better way to unwind than next to a roaring fire enjoying a warming glass of Vintage Port.

Today we are pleased to offer this selection of great vintages from the top producers. With great ratings from the critics, these wines are superb for enjoying now but also have outstanding ageing potential, making them excellent value for money.

FONSECA
The company was founded in 1822 with the acquisition by Manoel Pedro Guimaraens of the merchant company Fonseca & Monteiro. Not long after this purchase Manoel Pedro Guimaraens, a supporter of the “War of two brothers”, was forced to flee Portugal hidden in an empty port cask. He settled in England where the headquarters of the company remained until 1927. By 1840 Fonseca was the second largest shipper of Port Wine and the first Fonseca was shipped into England in 1847. The quality of Fonseca has been upheld by successive members of the Guimaraens family. Fonseca may indeed be unique in the annals of port in that every vintage of Fonseca over the last 100 years has been made by just 4 members of the Guimaraens family.

GRAHAM
W & J Graham was originally a Glasgow-based textiles firm which became port shippers in the early 1800s. Later that century, a young Scot called Andrew James Symington emigrated to work for Graham's, but, losing interest in textiles, he became a successful port shipper and his descendants today now own Graham's, which is the jewel in the crown of the Symington Group. Graham's Vintage Ports are the epitome of richness and concentration, and this is reflected right through their range of wines from ruby to vintage classics.

DOW
Dow's Vintage Ports are among the longest-lived, possessing impressive backbone and structure, they are also at the drier end of the scale and often show magical qualities on the nose. Much of the fruit used in declared vintage years comes from the premium vineyards at Quinta do Bomfim, which also makes a very fine wine in non-declared years under that name. The Symington family have been involved with Dow most of the 20th century, taking full control in 1961. More recently, the purchase of Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira will further strengthen Dow's in declared vintage years, as this estate's top-grade fruit will be used in the blend. Dow's, with Warre's, lies just beneath the top flight of Vintage Ports and consequently offers less market-driven prices; when one considers the time these wines will keep and improve over, one has to appreciate their sheer value for money.

WARRE
Warre's is the oldest, continuously British-owned brand, as well as one of the most distinguished. It currently thrives under the ownership of the Symington family, who have furthered its quality with the purchase twenty years ago of the Quinta da Cavadinha, an estate with nearly 100 hectares of highest-quality vines in the Rio Torto valley. In more recent years, the brand has caught up with Dow (they are both owned by the Symington family); and, while Dow's is a firmer-styled wine, Warre's has a distinctive character that leans towards perfectly balanced, elegant wines which often reveal astonishing qualities on the nose.
