had a friend and his girlfriend over for dinner last week. We had an Italian red, a Portuguese Red, and a French sweet white for desert (Wierd not having any Port, but I've been dying to try that sweet white for some time). I didn't take any notes as I was the cook and way to busy talking and laughing.
That said, everyone agreed the Portuguese red was the best (and this from people who have only had a few Ports before and no dry reds....I was quite happy.)
Here is the winner of the night and my impression.
2001 Herdade do Esporão Reguengos Reserva (Alentejano region):
Showed best after about 45-55 minutes of being open (although not decanted). Lots of dark cherries, still a touch of tannins left, good strong palate of dark fruit, a hint of oak, and a long finish. I wish I could find (or had) more of this.
