For The Love Of Port

I've just been looking at Corney & Barrow's current wine list. They have 15 6-bottle packs of the Vesuvio 1994 on offer for a price that works out at £23.04 per bottle, delivered to mainland UK provided you order a minumum of 12 bottles.

I'm certainly interested in buying 6 bottles. Anyone interested in buying with me?

PS - I've no affiliation blah, blah, blah but have had some great service from them in the past when trying to track down information on the Taylors 1950 Special Quinta and I think £23.04 a bottle for this wine is a serious bargain.

Yes, I've been looking at that for some time. But I only want one case. If we could get 5 cases for the US, then bringing it in would be worthwhile.

I would be in for 2 six-packs, to compliment the four I already have. As a wise man said, you can never have enough of this particular port, and even with shipping thats a better deal than I have ever seen in the US!

I looked at the price. I think it's double what is quoted above. I believe that these are 6 bottle cases and not 12 bottle cases. For the UK guys it's £276.54 for a six pack case. That's £46.09 / bottle. That's not a real discont over the going rate from what I see.

For the US, this price is £225.00 (in bond), which is $74.46 a botte. Not a great deal, but OK. With the $10 of shipping the price becomes abot $85 / bottle.... but that's with all the taxes paid for the US. Still, I don't think this is a screaming deal. Now, if these are 12 packs at that price... I'll buy all 15 cases!!

Short question to this shop - what is the meaning of in Bond buying? And Does anyone (probably the US ppl) know how the shipping is handled taxwise? Do they subtract the VAT and you have to pay your customs in your home country?

I'm planning to call the shop on Monday to see what the price "per bottle" would be for this wine. As David says, if the price is £276 for a 6 bottle case then the wine is not a good deal and this is at or around what appears to be the current retail price.

If the price is for a 12 bottle case then this is a good deal and I will be buying some.

I'll post the results of my conversation with Corney & Barrow on Monday.

"In Bond" means that import duty and VAT have not yet been paid. In the UK you can hold port or any other wine In Bond until you want to take delivery of it. When you do take delivery you pay Duty (currently around £20 per 12 bottle case) plus VAT on the original purchase price. This can be a great benefit if you have held the wine In Bond for many years until it is mature. Those who purchased cases of port 30 years ago and have held then In Bond would be paying VAT on the 1977 price rather than the 2007 price 8)

I am not sure how this is handled for international shipments. However, as you live in the EU, I think you probably have the choice of paying tax in either the source or destination country. You should never have to pay tax twice in the EU if you follow the correct process.

When I buy in bond and export it out of the UK, I pay no VAT or UK duty. But you are correct, I have to pay the duty / taxes of the county where it is imported. This is a huge advantage in the US because the taxes on imported wine are quite minimal.

So what is the outcome of this? I think that we should make an offer for the entire lot of 15 cases.... if the price is reasonable.

I've tried to post the results of my conversation with Corney & Barrow three times now, but been defeated each time by the virus that is rampaging its way through my body at the moment.

The result of my phone call with C&B is that the price quoted is for a six bottle case and not for a 12 bottle case. Dave was right in that I was dividing by 12 and not by 6. At £276 (including taxes, duties and delivery) for 6 bottles this is not a price that looks attractive to me - its probably in line with what I see as the current market price.

In the release of the 3rd anniversary edition of the newsletter which will be released either late tonight or tomorrow: There is a current TN of this particular wine and there will be another in next month's newsletter when discussing a particular vertical of Vesuvio.
