Last night, I hosted a few members of FTLOP for a Colheita tasting followed by dinner and Douro reds. I was very busy during dinner so did not take any notes but there was a little red wine left over which I am tasting now.

2004 Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines
This wine is a beautiful dark violet / red. The nose is rich and complex with lots of dark fruit, earth, and leather. Medium to full body, the wine is well balanced and nicely structured. Long finish with some plum and tobacco leaf. Still going strong 24 hours later. Will evolve wonderfully for several years. If drinking now, decant for a couple hours. 93

2003 Niepoort Redoma
Intensely dark, nearly opaque red/purple. Some very fine sediment is suspended. The nose is open and expressive with hints of plum, blackberry, earth, and a hint of smoke. Huge mouth puckering tannins with pretty good acidty. The finish is clipped short by the tannins. Lots of potential here but this needs some time for the tannins to resolve. 91

Other standout wines from dinner were the 1996 Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional and the 2003 Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte. Both of these wines were awesome as evidenced by the empty bottles after dinner.

Kris,

Thanks again for a great day (as it was an almost all day adventure) it was just awsome. The Crasto is one heck of a wine, and considering it sells for around the $30 mark, is a no brainer.

Andy,

I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope it was worth the trip up. Let's see, we started at 3pm and didn't finish till after 12am. Over 9 hours of drinking, I was hurting a little bit this morning but it was a good time.

I'm depressed I was not there. My inattention to my PM box (combined with a pop-up blocker) will not be repeated. I can imagine it now, and look forward to your notes.
