For The Love Of Port

My mother in law has decided to sell her Port collection. Has been stored in original cases in a climate controlled cellar. Located in Marietta, GA. Please message me if there's anything you're interested in. I will update this list as need be. Will sell by the case or entire collection. I'm happy to provide pictures and answer any questions to the best of my ability. I am not a Port expert so please bear with me if I ask for more specifics to your questions. Thanks

Happy to introduce myself. I'm Chris. Originally from New York, relocated to Georgia many years ago. Interest include cooking, golf, fishing, shooting sports, good cigars and bourbon. Husband to Michelle and father of two teenagers.

How much do you want as one parcel sale?

Rough estimate is about 30K for the whole thing. That's a lot of port...

I would be interested in 5 bottles of 1977 Fonseca, 9 bottles of the 1985 Graham and 1 case each of the 1994 Fonseca and Taylor.

You list full cases, which I presume means 12, but some of those like Quinta do Vesuvio, are typically sold in cases of six. Can you confirm that all of what you have listed are full cases of 12? Personally, I'd be interested in 1997 and 1992 Quinta do Vesuvio wood foot-locker six-packs, and possibly 1977 Smith Woodhouse. But I'll disclaim up front that I'm a total bargain hunter and probably not willing to pay something close to retail for those.

Cases of Vesuvio are 6 bottles per case. Everything else is your standard 12 bottles. Partial cases are noted as well.

The low reserve on the 9 cases of 1994 Fonseca is 15,660.00 and the 6 cases of Taylor is 9,360.00. That's almost 25k right there.

My mother in law hired a professional company to appraise the entire collection. She received the appraisal today. Low estimate for everything came in at 74,500.00 and the high estimate was 111,575.00. If it went to auction, total reserve was set at 83,500.00.

I'm quoting bottles and cases pretty much in the middle(close to the reserve) to anyone interested. I'm trying to get some pictures posted on here but every time I try the site tells me my file is too large.

You have plenty of great stuff (you really do) and there's about 10-15 cases worth I'd consider, but....

Keep in mind getting the wine to the auction house comes at a cost and seller's commissions if they charge them. Auction is your best bet as you don't want to get into parting cases or bottles here and there. You'll have to buy wine shippers, take the risk on damage, etc...

Your '94 Fonseca comes out to $145 a bottle on the 2nd hand market. That is all the money and little hopeful. I'd place the same 9 cases $9000 and be over-the-world. Let's us know who and when you consign your port with! You have a captive audience.

I bought 1994 Taylor for 115 each from Christie's, and 1994 Fonseca from Acker at 97 each; that's less than 19k, and subtract out the buyer's premium and you are below 16k. I have a friend that sold a collection appraised similar to yours. I'll ask him what he netted percentage wise vs. the auction house estimate as well as CellarTracker.

And checking my notes, I paid 32 for 1994 Martinez from a retailer, 65 for 1994 Vesuvio at retail, 38 at auction complete with the nice wooden cases. These purchases were all in the last five years.

My estimate was at $35 a bottle for the whole thing; my total could be off if I did not count all the cases correct (which very well could be). However many bottles are there at $30-35 a bottle and that's a fair price for an "all in" purchase.

I'm going to leave it at this....I have some nice Ports to offer and everything is negotiable to an extent. If it gets to the point where it's not worth my time to advertise it, negotiate it, and ship it, then it will end up at a auction house and I can wash my hands of it. I'm going to base my quotes and discount them based on recent sales and not ones that happened in the past 5 years.
