Decanted 8 hours, cork soaked through but mostly cooperative, fill into neck.

Nose on day one was annoyingly dominated by heat and VA varnishyness with substantial dark fruit trying to poke through.

Palate was again sharper than the other 2 examples of this I've had, but had excellent grippy, but mostly smoothed tannins, excellent deep rich body (and dark, mostly opaque color) and excellent dark berry and brambly flavors. Some heat beyond my ideal also present but adding some spice. It's a shame as this is in my "Mount Rushmore" of sub $100 VPs and didn't show as well for my guests as I'd've hoped.

Day 2: marked improvement in both heat and VA, though a touch less of everything else nice as well. Shows much more of the balance, youthfulness and positive character that I like in this wine. No need to drink soon, but this bottle was in a wonderful place while still showing a lot of fruit and friendly tannins. My score is based on the better of the days' showings.
