Sep/Oct Theme - Single Quinta Ports

A little slow off the blocks, but I eventually picked up the baton on the Virtual Tasting theme. My suggested theme is based on the theme for an offline we're having in London on Thursday (tomorrow). My theme for Sep / Oct is single quinta vintage ports.

I'll post my note after Thursday. Our tasting is blind so I can't say too much! (And if anyone wants to join us at very short notice, we do have a spare seat. Be at the Boot & Flogger at 6.30pm with a decanted bottle of SQVP.)

Good catch Al [friends.gif]

Besides some different Vesuvio I think I have a bottle of 2004 Quinta do Bomfim that could be a good candidate for this theme.

Am I allowed to cross-post links to tasting notes? We had our single quinta port tasting in London last week and you can find links to the tasting notes hanging off this post.

Hmmm. I was thinking I could just pop a 375ml for the tasting, but the only SQVP I have in that size is:
2005 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Quinta de Vargellas
So I might just have to wait until I'm in Porto, which will still be during the timeframe specified [cheers.gif]

I opened a 1994 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port for gaming night at Lisa & Vic's.

Extremely dry and crumbly cork, but still an outstanding bottle of Port. I gave it 94 points and felt like it might have been a point or two higher if not for the cork causing some very slight premature aging.

I've got a 750ml of the 2008 Quinta de Vargellas in the decanter as I type. Will report back with how it is later.

I opened a Dow's Quinta do Bomfim 2004 vintage port this past week on Tuesday for my best friend to try. I was unfortunately ill and couldn't neither taste nor smell very well. I had a small glass that night and it was stored in the decanter with tinfoil until Saturday where I felt better. Still take this note with a grain of salt as my senses were still impaired by the residual illness.

A smell of fermented cherries and crushed cherry pits (almonds). Present tannins though they have begone their remission. Very noticeable acidity and freshness albeit very pleasant. Some spirits. Still very much full of primary fruit, big time. Well take quite a few years before coming close to maturity. A solid made port though the almond flower in this one threw me off a bit.

Well, on the 25th of September, while in Portugal I got to taste: All were tasty, but the Burmester was the best at 92+ points.

And on the 26th, Warres was the theme of the day: The 2001 was the best of the bunch for drinking now, but the 2005 seemed to have the best potential for the future.

I have never tried doing one of these Virtual Tastings, but if any of these fit into a theme, you might like to choose it for the next one. I mostly have classic British house Vintage and Late Bottled Vintage. The Quinta do Noval Vintage Porto fro 2003 is probably there too awaiting shelving. Wine, Locale Drinking Window(s):
