Updating the madeira wine vintage list

Hi madeira fans, I’d love your help

I’ve often marvelled at the madeira vintage list created by Dr. Wolf Peter Reutter. Since the last time it was updated in 2012 many ancient wines, previously unseen at auction or at tastings have surfaced.I thought it was time for an update.

I’ve already had a go with the 18th century but wanna get madeira fan’s feedback before starting to look at 19th century list. Maybe we should add more fields, what do you think?

The main sources I’ve used are Peter’s vintage list, Mannie Berk’s auction appendix in Cossart’s 2nd edition book, CellarTracker, EcoleNoblis, FLTOP, Christies and other auction sites.

Cellar Tracker currently has the longest vintage list though doesn't have everything plus I believe there are some incorrect and multiple entries on its list.

Feel free to help improve this list. The Google Sheet below is open to everyone to view and comment. If you want to be added as an Editor request access or send a reply/DM with your email address and I’ll update permissions.

Hi Andy!

I have to say that I always add all my Madeiras into CellarTracker, so I couldn't be of any help additionally to those Madeiras already listed in CT.

But I am very much excited and the only question is, if Roy has already signalized his OK to publish an updated list?!

Cheers

Andreas

Thanks Andreas, good to know

Well the list is far from finished so nothing to publish as yet. It's a work-in-progress, I thought it would be a good way to bring madeira community together

Cellartracker folks are very good about fixing entry errors. If you find any, I'd compile a list and email them so they can sort it out and fix what needs to be fixed. I do so every once in a while when I find glaring errors or duplicates of Ports (lots of vintages people enter for 10/20/30...tawnys [dash1.gif] ).

Hi Andy (V),

they are good, but as often as I tried to "suggest" a fix I received the response that my suggestion has not been executed.

Which is a pitty, and to be honest disencourages me to dig deeper into correction mode...

Well that’s a bummer. Wonder why they didn’t?

Hi Andreas,

I can't tell you why this happened, but I am sorry it did. I am not the guy able to fix this for you, tech-challenged unfortunately. But we have a good tech team, and I am sure they can get this working for you. Here is where you can detail what's going on:

A simple link to the help desk, would have been great.

It’s regarding CellarTracker not FTLOP so our helpdesk, as good as they are, can’t help.

Hi Andy(M),

I very much admire your vintage list effort.

I think there are many interesting questions here:
- what are the criteria to give different bottlings of the wine with same origin separate entries (e.g., 1808 Malvasia Solera, 1920 MWC Boal)?
- should the same wine bottled at the same time under different labels (e.g., 1863 MWC Boal) have different entries?
- what is an acceptable "confirmation"? Some fakes make it all the way to the auctions, some items are clearly miscatalogued.
- how would we want to use pictures from private collections, old tastings, etc.?

I have added the "discussion" column to raise questions about some of the entries. I would suggest we allow a single comment in the list and if anybody wants to discuss further, we do it in the forum.
