For The Love Of Port

I'll be in Dublin Ireland from march 6 till march 10 to visit some friends and have quite a few pints of the brown stuff they call Guinness
Does anyone know a good wineshop in Dublin where i can score some port ?

I'm probably going to be in Dublin in March also, but it will most likely be later in the month. The trip obviously isn't fully planned yet, but once it is I'll let people know and would love to get together for some Port![/url]

I occassionally travel to Dublin on business and will stick these dates ün my diary in case we happen to be there at the same time.

If you want to buy from BBR its worth calling them first as they would probably ship some other specific ports from their London shop to Dublin for you to collect. I have heard of them doing this from their airport shops so they might also do it from Dublin.

Oh, and Guinness is black, not brown

After some very pleasant e-mails with the owner of BBR Dublin i ordered the following wines from him. They will be waiting for me when i get there.

i will certainly try. My plane leaves Amsterdam at 5:45 PM.
My arrival at Dublin Airport will be 6:20 PM local time.
Then i have to go through customs and my friend has to pick me up and drive to the city.
Are you in Dublin on the 7th ? We can meet at BBR ?

I know for a fact that I will be staying overnight in Dublin on Thursday March 6th (but only the one night), so if anyone else is there at the time and would like to meet up for a port and a steak (none of that filthy brown Liffey water for me - have you seen the state of the river?) then it would be a pleasure.

(Erik - have you confirmed your flights? Arriving at the airport at 6:20pm would mean that you should be able to join us around 8:00pm without too much difficulty.)

Cead Mile Failte (a hundred thousand welcomes). Just let me know where you plan to meet up and I will try and make it (doubtful). I live outside Dublin so not great at recommending a place to eat but the Port House (6770298) on South William Street is good for Tapas and Neary's in Chatham Street is great for Pints! I think Alex knows Dublin well so he can guide you all.

Jus De Vine in Portmarnock (8461192) is a great wine store, not sure if they stock good Port or you could try Terroirs on Morehampton Road (6671311).

Derek and I did meet up in Dublin last Thursday and Justin was able to make it - so it was a real pleasure to have been a part of the first official Dublin Port Lovers' Offline #1.

We shared a bottle of 1997 Vesuvio (young, raw, powerful and needing another 20 years before the next one is opened), a bottle of 1994 Ramos Pinto (very good, but still needing 5-10 years to show what it can deliver) and an unlabelled half bottle that Justyn generously brought with him.

It was quite exciting opening the half bottle. Two-thirds of the cork was extracted in a single piece and the branding was still surprisingly clear. The contents of the bottle (which had been stood upright for over a day) were carefully filtered through some muslin and Derek's collapsable travel funnel. The emergency decanter was a clean pint glass and the pale, rose coloured port was allowed to stand for an hour before we tasted it. By the time we tasted it, it had put on some colour and started to deliver a beautiful nose of cinnamon and baked apples. Lovely and smooth, wonderfully integrated the port showed its age but was not declining. The fruit that was present was clear, sweet and raisiny. The finish was mouthfilling but faded quite quickly. A lovely, lovely port and one that questions whether port in half bottles matures more quickly than in full size bottles.

What was it? It was Cockburn 1947! Thank you Justin!

I'll be back in Dublin on the evening of Wednesday June 4. If anyone would like to meet up for some port, then please let me know.
