1940 Niepoort Garrafeira Port

Bottled in 1945, Decanted in 1970
These are always a rare treat to try so I was very grateful to Sean for opening this for us. The color had a tan center that fades to a green and yellow edge with redish hints through out. The nose was very interesting and very complex. I've never had a Port where the nose was such a cross between a really old Vintage Port and a Colheita. There was toffee, pralines, nutmeg, spearmint, and a hint of cinnamon. Yet it still had this delicate floralness seen in old VP's. The palate great acidity, cedar, spices, cinnamon, a touch of heat that added, not detracted, to it. The finish was what I would describe as ultra long. It was agreed by all there, this was one hell of a great wine. I really struggled between giving it 97 or 98 points, ultimately settling on 97 points.
