For The Love Of Port

It's been nearly two months since I've opened a bottle of Port and I need to rectify that immediately. I'm thinking of opening one of these. Which should it be?

2003 Taylor
2003 Fonseca
2003 Vesuvio
1994 Dow
1994 Graham
1990 Dow Quinta do Bomfim
1990 Vesuvio
1985 Graham

1990 Dow's Bomfim

I say that because I have a 1990 Graham's Malvedos I've been working on since yesterday and I'm curious to see how the Bomfim stacks up to it.

Hi Andy, I was leaning towards that one myself. Mostly because along with the '90 Vesuvio it's one I haven't tasted yet. But I was also thinking it might be fun to catch one of the 03's before they shut down. What say everyone else? I'll open and post a tasting note for the one that gets the most votes.

Vesuvio 2003. Would love to read your opinion on that one!

I'll throw in a vote for the Graham 1985 on the basis that it's the only one old enogh to drink

1985 Graham. The '85 Graham may be on the top 3 best ports of the 1980's. Just a splendid sweet port with lots of Graham's flavor. I prefer 85 to the 83 and 80.

I'd like to hear how the 94 Graham is. I have a case for a few years and have never tried one.

1990 Vesuvio. I'd be interested to see how it has evolved over the last two decades (almost) and get an idea of what you feel its long-term aging potential might be.

So which one did you open Kris? I hope you enjoyed it no matter which you chose. Let us know and if you have a second, a TN would be most appreciated.

I haven't opened one yet Roy but it looks like it will be the 1985 Graham. I plan to pull the bottle out of my offsite storage this weekend. Look for the taste note this weekend or early next week. I'll probably pull a couple other bottles of Port out as well to line up on death row and open those before the weather gets hot.

Shhh, I'm trying to keep people away from all that Port up there....more for me to drink when I visit.

Seattle is a lot like Dublin, except that the weather cycles a little more slowly.

A typical 24 hrs goes like this...

Dublin:

0:00 rain
4:00 clear & cold
8:00 drizzle
12:00 clear & breezy
16:00 rain
20:00 clear & cold

Seattle:

Day: mixed rain/mist/drizzle
Night: clear & cold

We have a second Port season in June when the monsoons arrive.

What Kris meant to say is that while we do occasionally have nice summers, they only last for the last 2 weeks of July and the last 2 weeks of August. The first two weeks of August are too hot, and the rainy season starts again on the 1st of September and lasts through at least the 4th of July.

I mean, seriously, we have as many ways to talk about rain as the Eskimos have to talk about snow. There's a reason for that!
