1955 Ferreira VP question

Post by Andy Velebil »

An older friend of mine recently found this tucked away in the back of his small cellar. He told me he bought this back in the mid 1970's and he asked me if I knew anything about it. I didn't, other than it was a great year for VP's, but I told him I knew the perfect people to ask...all of you :!:

Any thoughts on this old VP that I can pass on to him.

When I cannot find notes anywhere else especially on older vintages. I go to my Michael Broadbent ,The Great Vintage Book of Wine.
The 1955 is a 5 star vintage. 1955 Ferreira:

"Several notes. Still fairly deep, classic , sweet, fairly full bodied, rich fruity, lovely. Last tasted Jan 1985 Four Stars, Now to 2000+"

I think you have a winner there!

I have only had this twice, both in deep verticals put on by a very close friend of mine, in fact, Michael Broadbent's son Bartholomew. Once in the late '90s and the other in the early part of this decade. Both times very enjoyable wines, still quite alive, but neither of them were "great" wines, although fine bottles. I am not home to give you scores, so will have to wait until next week. Off the cuff, I'd say 90 pts. on my scale FWIW.
