A Legendary Port Lover Dies

Although I never met the couple, I've heard stories directly from Michael and Bartholomew Broadbent about Barney and Belle. Sad to hear of Barney's passing. Although he collected wines from near and far, from what I have been told, this gentleman had one of the very deepest Port cellars in the entire world. Broadbent's book is filled with anecdotes from drinking together with Mr. Rhodes. I am sipping the last of my bottle of an LBV and toasting to this esteemed man of wine who had a great enthusiasm for Port.

Sad new indeed. They also planted Martha's Vinyard and the Bella Oaks Vinyard made famous by Heitz. Barney was also a big Madeira fan. I remember seeing Hugh Johnson's series Wine on television at a fine old Madeira tasting. He brought an 18th century verdelho.
